80gig Maxtor internal HD crash need to retreave data

Hay folks, I have a crash system, can't get System to go up right, IT enor HD, says C drive does not exist.
I recently did a routine defrag on my system when I when back to boot the system. Computer went into a loop type of routine and enors HD.
I assume that the system has crash. I am now trying to retreave the data off the HD to place them on a new 300gig HD using and older computer I have and maybe get it back up and running. But I am total lost as to how to retreave data off of a HD drive like this, So I need some step by step help on how to do this, So what do I need to do and what are the question I need to answer to you before I can get started.

God Bless All

Re: 80gig Maxtor internal HD crash need to retreave data

Hi,

Put the HDD back in the computer where it used to be. Then:

Start the computer with the Windows CD.
At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to select the repair option.
You will have to enter the Administrator password - if none, just press <Enter>.
At the command prompt - type chkdsk /r > press <Enter>.
When the disk check is done:
Type Exit > press <Enter>.
Take the Windows disc out and reboot.

If that solution does not work you can install that drive as a slave on a working PC, access your files and copy them. You might also try accessing system restore during boot and go back to the last working settings.

Re: 80gig Maxtor internal HD crash need to retreave data

Hi Guys, sorry I didn't respond last night but I was in a very depress state of mine. Any way!
eneles, I,uh did try to do what you had said with no luck. Me and JTP worked with it for a while and the whole system will not respond to any commands to anything, even tried to place another drive into the system and get it to format and load software, but no, all it does is come up in mem test countdown then flash WInXp for five sec, and back to mem test. When I do manage to get it to C> or to Dos control it says C> drive does not exist. CD drive works because it does load, PS checks ok. System just does not respond. Can not even get Bios control.
philb7, Today I had to get a friends computer up and running so I did not get the chance to try anything but I will tak your info wilt me to the shop tomorrow and try it, I have another sys set up so I"ll use it. Lesson in tomorrow for a responce.
