[SOLVED] Problem installing on IDE with SATA

My system

Q6600
680i SLI LT mobo
2x2GB OCZ
150GB SATA Raptor (Vista currently installed)
2x 80GB IDE (currently both are empty, and formatted via Partition Magic 8.0)

Locations via Device manager in Vista:

SATA location: Bus Number 0, Target Id 0, LUN 0
IDE 1 location: Location 1 (Channel 0, Target 1, Lun 0) Master?
IDE 2 location: Location 0 (Channel 0, Target 0, Lun 0) Slave?

The first drive on the cable is master, the second is slaved off of it.

My plan was to install XP on one of the 80GB's, and then use EasyBCD to rewrite the Vista bootloader, as I did this on my old machine with the same two 80GB HD's.

When I installed XP it went fine until the first reboot, at which time it got a Disk Read Error, and told me to hit ctrl+alt+del to restart. At that time, I could not boot into either XP, or Vista, so I did a complete reinstall of Vista on the 150GB SATA and formatted the 2x 80GBs, and this is where I am now.

What am I missing that's keeping me from installing on one of these 80GB drives?

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

is your master drive at the end of the data cable ?

check your boot order to ensure your IDE drive remains as first boot of the hard drive choices

also try the drives with only one of them attached to the data cable at a time, maybe this will give more hints as to your problem orgin

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

I will post back, I am at work now. I called BFG techsupport, and he said that it didn't matter where the disk was in priority, that the comp would go through them till it found where it was supposed to boot from. I'll try it again when I get home with the IDE master as first boot disk, and report back.

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

Have you set the jumpers to be master, or are you trying cable select. I suggest you use master and slave for jumpers. That would be master for the hard drive and slave for whatever else you have on there.

I believe the jumpers are set to master and slave, but they maybe on cable select, I didn't look at them when I put them in the new comp, I just hooked them up like they were in the old one. Maybe I switched them or something.

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

Points of clarity to assist you!

Be sure you don't mix up the terms boot order of hard drives and boot order. If you look in the Boot Menu of your bios setup menu,. the term Boot Priority usually (not all boards call it that) is there.

Under that section, there is an area called Boot Device Priority (or something similar) that you need to have set as:

CDRom - 1st
Floppy - 2nd (if you have one)
Hard Drive - 3rd (this is your boot drive)

Then, on most boards on down under the same section, there is a place called Hard Disk Drives (or something similar) under that heading. This is where you must have the hard drive you want to install on listed FIRST in that section.

If you change anything, don't forget to save before you exit.

I set it to boot first off the CD/DVD when I am installing, and then switch it to hard drive when I am done, with CD/DVD as second boot device.

The hard drives priority is my Raptor, which houses my install of Vista, and then one of the two IDEs.

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

If you wish to install an OS on the IDE drives, then you need to list that first during the install. If you still have trouble and want to install an OS on the IDE, then unhook the other drives until you have the install done.

If you simply wish to use them and not install an OS, then the Raptor should stay first.

See, I asked them about that, having the disk I am installing on higher on the disk priority list in BIOS, and he said that it didn't matter, because it would look until it saw what it needed by elimination.

I am going to take it apart again, make suire the jumpers are right, and only hook up the master IDE, install Windows, hook the others up, and then reinstall the Vista bootloader with EasyBCD. I just hope it doesn't screw up again, I am sick of installing Windows :P

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

food for thought :

the only trouble I see with removing the power plug from the raptor during the XP OS install on the IDE drive is >>>>> it will try to label the XP drive as "C" and no doubt vista is already calling the raptor "C"

I think you have a jumper conflict here on your drives; thats all

set your master and slave and enjoy the ride

Good Point linderman, that one slipped by me. Thanks for the bump and I agree completely on that one.

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

Ok, I printed out the jumper config sheets for both the HDs I am using so I'll have them when the puter's off :)

One thing, the SATA, if I am leaving it plugged in, it not having a jumper will not effect anything right? The jumpers are only affecting the HDs on the IDE same cable.

Re: Problem installing on IDE with SATA

Yep, the jumpers on IDE drives only have an effect upon the IDE drives.

Good call. My jumpers were way off. I don't even know how it was working on my last rig. But all is good XP, and Vista, with Vistas bootloader going strong.
