I Posted this in the Hard Drive Support Section, but I was not sure if I was getting the right Audience. I decided to post here too.
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium PC: Dell XPS 410 / Dell Inspiron E1705 PROBLEM: I just purchased a 500GB WD SATA Hard Drive and installed it into a new USB SYBA Versa SY-UEN 3.5" Aluminum IDE/SATA Enclosure... I was having a problem with my Desktop (my Dell XPS 410 - Internet stopped working, Johnwill tried to help but to no avail I'm stuck) so I decided to purchase the HDD to back up my files, hoping to restore my computer completely and start from scratch. WELL, I plugged in my new set-up, and it appeared to install, but its showing it as a CD-Drive rather than a Hard Drive, and I cannot access it. In Device Manager it is under the "Disk Drive" tree as "WDC WD50 00AAJS-00YFA0 USB Device" So, since I can't update my drivers via internet (remember, I'm disconnected) I decided to test my new set-up on my Dell Inpiron E1705 Laptop (which for some reason still can connect to the internet)... Now I when it finished installing the drivers (automatically), I opened up "My Computer" but nothing was there (not even as a CD Drive). I went to Device Manager, and I saw it there again (under Disk Drives labeled as "WDC WD50 00AAJS-00YFA0 USB Device") and I attempted to update drivers. It said that it already had the best driver available (after a short search). I looked through all of the forums, used the search feature, and found nothing specific to this. ... ![]() ~Tim **********UPDATE********** OK! I am at work at the moment and I brought it with me. At work we use HP Desktops with XP Home Edition. I plugged it in, and it went through the same procedure as my Laptop (the notification icon said "Installing USB Mass Storage Device", etc). When I go to "My Computer" it appears as a CD Drive... I brought my Laptop with me so I can go back and forth between Vista and XP to check if anything would work. Thank for any help you can provide! (I have a feeling that its going to be an easy fix) ![]() Last edited by tazinlwfl : 12-28-2007 at 06:34 AM. |

Re: 500gb WD Hard Drive in a SYBA Versa Enclosure
OMG!!!
I think I figured it out! I right clicked on "My Computer" and clicked on Manage then I under Storage > Disk Management I scrolled all the way down and found my new Hard Drive. I right clicked on it and Allocated the drive (w/e that means) and then created a partition (or vice versa, i can't remember now). I am currently Formatting the drive, and hope it works!!! im so happy I figured it out by myself! (and I'm a freakin newbie!) lol |

I don't think you should try disabling the fan - your HDD will fry.
Probably a cheap fan that was installed. ![]() |

Re: 500gb WD Hard Drive in a SYBA Versa Enclosure
not disable it, turn off the entire unit. Its in an external case, and I want to open it up and see if anything is wrong with the fan.
its almost done formatting, and as soon as it is, im going to turn it off so I can let it cool down (and open it up) |

Re: 500gb WD Hard Drive in a SYBA Versa Enclosure
yea, its the fan. Its so tight in the case that I think one of the smaller cables is hitting the blades. I disabled it and have been running it for a little while now, and its fine
(the case is aluminum and it alread has a vent built in. The fan is almost pointless at this point) its running cooler now that it did 10 minutes ago. I will come back if tehre are any problems. Thanks for the ear! (and sorry bout the double posts) |

Im glad I figured it out when I did... im sure it's something that is supposed to be standard procedure, but I was a newbie and had no idea what to do. Glad my solution worked! ![]() I've actually installed the HDD in my tower, so i'm not having a problem with the external case anymore but I have noticed that the WD HDD is LOUD as hell... ![]() ~Tim |
