Sata Hdd

Hi Everyone

My first post so here goes!

Last night I tried to install a second SATA HDD to my ASUS P5B Motherboard. BIOS would not recognise, tried all four other SATA ports changed cables did pretty much all I could!

Eventually gave up! Then when I went to reboot there was a disk read error wity my SATA HDD that XP is loaded on. I let XP fix any errors and re-booted. Could not find disk! Checked BIOS not there HELP! Switched off power checked leads reset RAM and it booted OK PHEW! Then this morning went to power on again its looking for the HDD. Any ideas guys the MoBo is only 6 mths old RAM is new and HDD about 18mths?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Re: Sata Hdd

You might check the Hard Drive Priority in the Bios setup menu to make sure that drive is listed in there first. Some times when in there, it defaults to IDE and then won't work.

Also, check your boot order to see that it also is listed to boot from. Then, be sure that you have all Sata items enabled in your setup menu.

One last thing, make sure you didn't somehow dislodge your ribbon cable from that drive, they just don't fit very tight on Sata and are easy to dislodge and lose the connection.

Re: Sata Hdd

Hi

Many thanks for your reply.

I have set BIOS to DVD, then HDD, ribbons & connectors checked, am currently running a windows Repair (it seems as though it is sometimes detected and others not?)

Any suggestions on what may be causing it?

Many thanks once gain!

Re: Sata Hdd

I just think you may have a loose ribbon cable that makes connection only at times. I use cable ties to secure those to something solid.

Re: Sata Hdd

Can your motherboard handle 300 MB's or 150 MB's transfer speeds? Most new HD's do 300 out of the box, but there is a jumper to slow it down to 150. My older motherboard when it had a 300 MB attached, it didn't see the drive. I had to slow the transfer speed down.

Good luck.
