saving data on large drives

I recently bought a 320gb drive and am running on XP SP2. I saved all my data on an extended partition that I assumed would still be there if the primary partition was formatted. Today I did a fresh re-install of XP and noticed the extended partition is no longer being recognized. I just installed SP2 and it still does not recognize the original extended partition, and sees it as unallocated space in Disk Manager. Did I lose all my data? Is there anyway to recover it?

thanks. But I tried that and it wasn't able to recover any lost partitions.
