NTLDR Missing

Hi All: This is my first time here so here goes. I had a Hard drive die on a compaq 5003US. I bought a 80 gig WD & the place I took it tryed to install windows XP when the machine has only 128 MB of memory.( I agree i need a new shop). well he formated the new drive & now all I get is the DOS saying NTLDR missing. My question is this drive shot or is there a disk out there or a way to repair this.I thank you all for your time Thank you . Hobo

Re: NTLDR Missing

Hi, welcome to TSF.

Is Windows installed?
Make sure you don't have a floppy or CD inserted when you start the computer.

Re: NTLDR Missing

Hi: I thank you for your reply. There is no OS because when XP would not preform the way it should he formated the hard drive & I'm guessing that formating took out whatever NTLDR is with it.Can I buy one of those repair it all disks & fix it or is it shot?. Thanks again. Hobo

Re: NTLDR Missing

The new hard drive should be healthy.
If the drive has been formatted you have to install Windows again.
If you want to use XP - get more RAM first. At least 512 MB.

Re: NTLDR Missing

Hi again: I will do that. I knew I needed at least 512 Mb. but didn't even think about it when the guy said he could put XP in my machine.so if I understand you, after I up the memory I boot off of my XP disk & that will take care of the NTLDR error ,Correct ? I can't thank you enough for your time & Knowledge. I think this is a cool site & I'm sure I'll be using it again . Thanks again. Hobo

Re: NTLDR Missing

Make sure the computer is set to boot from CD first (in BIOS).
Then start the computer with the XP disc inserted.
