Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

I have an 80 gb seagate external hard drive. s/n 5lr163zs p/n 9w286d-560. It says there is no serviceable parts. Last night it started making a nosie. So it won't work now. Is there some way I can retrieve the data I have on it. I have alot of files on it that I would REALLY hate to lose. thanks for any help.

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Hi, welcome to TSF.

Is the drive completely dead? No lights, sounds etc?

What model name/number?

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

it has the lil green light on top...it is on when i turn it on. It's make a sound when i turn it on but not what i think it's supposed to make. nothing comes up on my computer when i turn it on...the lil thing that lets you no it's hooking in to the desk top....

Seagate, i have the serial # 5LR163ZZ, part # 9W286D-560, those are the only identfing info i see on it. there is something that says...ITE E106814, then in another area it has ST300003U2. that's all the info I could find on it. Nothing that says model #

Thanks

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Is there another computer you can try the drive with?

Did you try another cable? Have you tried different USB ports on the computer?

Disconnect the drive from the power and the USB cable for 10-15 minutes - then connect it again.

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

I did try it on the other computer. Tried different cables. I disconnected the power...twice the first time it had been off for about 3 or 4 hours. Just down the 15 minutes again. It's getting ppower because it has the green light on but it's still just making a noise...kinda humming noise. When it first made a noise last night it kinda sounded like a disc driving opening and closing....don't know how to describe the stupid sound...haha

Thanks

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Is it possible to open the enclosure, get the drive out and connect it inside the computer?

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

I don't see why I couldn't open it up...just have to find a screw driver.....it has 4 screws on the bottom. Once I open it...then what.

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Look at the drive - there should be a model number (e.g. ST3400601U2-RK).

Post back with that number.

I'm afraid not. I did a search for ST300003U2 - nothing.

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

It may be possible to mount it inside the computer and save the files.
Before you do that some settings have to be changed.
That's why we need the model number. Or - a picture.

No hits when searching ST38020362-RK. Keep the drive disconnected until you can get it opened.

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Thanks. It's an IDE drive. Have a look at the jumper at the back of the drive:

Before you install the drive inside the computer, make sure the jumper is removed (drive set to slave).

Then open the computer case with the computer disconnected from the wall socket.
Connect the drive to the middle contact on a free ribbon cable (the ones connected to hard drives and CD drives).

Also - connect it to a 4-pin power plug.
