Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Post back if you get the drive running and need help retrieving data.

I don't like external hard drives , but this one is supposed to be good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148233

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

It sounds like the controller circuit, but not the hard drive itself, is broken.
That should be quite easy to replace, but I don't know what it would cost.

LizzyBeth41: I have exactly the same drive enclosure. Could you tell me how you opened up the top plastic cover? Thanks for your help.

sdas, on the bottom it has four screws...it's tamper resistant so they are torqued in. you will need a torque screw driver.

hope this helps. LizzyBeth

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Thanks, Lizzy; I suspected it; but did not believe Seagate would go to that extent to temper-proof the an enclosure, meant to accommodate replacable drives. :=(

Your Welcome! I was surprised that it was 'tamper' proof also. I don't think I will ever own another one. Mine is still sitting here full of data I can't get.

LizzyBeth - have you tried looking for an identical drive on eBay?
Then use the PCB from that drive.

Re: Seagate 80 gb external..can I retrieve data on it after it has "died"

Hey,
I saw you're having problems with a "dead" hard drive. If it's really dead, then Disc Savers can help you. However, they want between $500-$2,040 (depending on how many files they get off). I don't know if you have that kind of money to put into getting those files. But if you want the information to get in touch with them, let me know.
