[SOLVED] Master and Slave drive
Well currently on this computer my brother split a 40gb hard drive into 2 so i have a C and D hard drive. But today I ordered a 160gb hard drive. Can anyone help me how to make the 160gb a slave hard drive and also when I get it do I need to install Windows XP on it aswell?
Basicly I want my Master hard drive to be the 40gb and the slave to be 160gb where i put all my games and such. And also the 160gb is a Seagate 160GB EIDE Internal Hard Drive (ST3160023A-RK) Last edited by Darkpsycho; 10-01-2007 at 07:59 PM. |

Re: Master and Slave drive
G'Day, Darkpsyco, Welcome to TSF!
![]() To make your new 160Gb HDD the "Slave" Drive, you need to do this.... Connect the 160Gb Hdd to the middle connector of the IDE ribbon, with NO jumper pins. The jumper pins can be found at the rear of the Drive between the IDE Ribbon socket and the Molex power socket. When you connect it, Windows® should detect it as "found new hardware", and automatically install the Drivers required for it to operate. However, if this 160Gb HDD is brand new; then, you will need to format it so as to use it. (There is no need to install Windows® XP on it, if you intend to just use it for storage.) If you are not sure how to format the new HDD, post back and we will give you a guide to do it. Hope this answers your query. Kind Regards,

Re: Master and Slave drive
Hi,
Welcome to the forum. Here is a link that may help you out: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...00dd04090aRCRD Once you have it installed, you will not need a OS on it if you are using it as a slave. You can use Disk Management under windows XP to partition the drive and format it. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Master and Slave drive
I just remembered something. Since my brother split the 40gb hard drive so theres a C and D drive when I go into My Computer. If I plug in the 160gb hard drive will that like erase or delete C or D or will it add another hard drive? Cause I have my games on C but I have Windows and regulars programs on D

Re: Master and Slave drive
Hi,
As long as the 160GB is setup as a slave drive you will not loose anything on the C and D drives. Windows will assign a new drive or drive letters to the 160GB depending on how it is partitioned. It may read as G, H, I as an example. Thanks, Bill |

Re: Master and Slave drive
-.- I have the drive installed but now the problem is that when I try to use it my CPU usage shoots up from maybe like 10-20 to about 60-99%. And it only happens when have something on the drive. I'm also getting static in my sound which i think is from the CPU usage going up =/ Please help me out I'm getting irritated with this hard drive.
