HDD crash

Default HDD crash
I have a pentium 4 machine with 40 GB HDD. The HDD was partitioned in three parts. It worked for 3 years without any hitch. One day , while I was trying to shutdown the PC, Windows XP simply froze and I was required to switch off the computer.

Since then, windows doesnt boot. BIOS detects the HDD but XP doesnt load. It gets upto the windows loading screen and then freezes. I have now installed a new 160 GB HDD and loaded XP on it.

I tried recovering the data by making the old HDD as a slave. But the problem is as soon as I connect the HDD to the PC, windows simply freezes. I want to recover the data on the HDD. Knoppix is able to show the contents on the drive but I cant understand the german language message it shows.

Can anyone suggest some software which doesnt require windows and can boot the PC through CD and detect the HDD and recover the data.

Re: HDD crash

Try this link for KNOPPIX Recovery:
http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/
I am not sure what version of Knoppix you are using, but you could download an english version and give it a try. Anyhow this link will give you a step by step approach.
Let us know how you make out.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: HDD crash

Thanks BCCOMP. I downloaded the english version of knoppix ver 5.1.

Knoppix was able to show me all the files but now the problem is while I try to copy the files onto my new HDD ( which has windows XP loaded on it and the formatting is NTFS based ) , it says you dont permission. I have tried giving write and read access of the new HDD as suggested in the website but still I am getting the same error.

Then I read about the captive NTFS tool option under the knoppix utility menu. However in the version which I have the option is not available under the knoppix utility menu.

How do I get the option to enable NTFS read write ?

Re: HDD crash

Let's try using your new Windows installation to retrieve the files.
Make sure both hard drives are jumpered and connected correctly.
Enter BIOS and set it to boot from the new HDD.
Then take ownership of the files on your old hard drive.

Re: HDD crash

Dear eneles

the problem here is, as soon as I connect my old HDD as a slave with the jumper settings properly done, windows freezes. I need to disconnect the crashed HDD for windows to work normally again.

Re: HDD crash

Isn't that because the computer is trying to load the old Windows installation? Try connecting it as a master, temporarily replacing the CD drive.

Re: HDD crash

Actually I have already made the new HDD as the master and it boots and work perfectly without the old HDD. The problem is with the old HDD, as soon as I connect the old HDD as a slave, the windows which got loaded through the new HDD freezes.

Re: HDD crash

Try the old drive as secondary master.

Re: HDD crash

Are you able to use any other options like the CD Burning, USB or even the E-mail options?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: HDD crash

Hi Leo,
I am sorry about the captive NTSF on Knoppix 5.1, it isn't on the full install of knoppix 5.1either. There are other options you can use off the link I gave you.
Let me know how you make out.
Thanks,
Bill
