NTFS error

Alright, (Here I am again) This is the second(or first depending on how you look at it) of my questions form my recent system restore. Now when I reinstalled it it gave me the opportunity to upgrade to NTFS from Fat32. So I did expecting it to automatically recognise it as a 200 GB hard drive. (Now to fill you in if you don't remember me I have a 200 GB hard drive tht is recognised as 33GB big. I have everything on the perfect setting and BIOS reads it as 33 GB)

So do you guys know of anything I could be doing wrong or some type of update I can get that would upgrade it ?

Second in trouble part is since I upgraded to NTFS it is recognized as 33 GB still but it only gives me 9 of that 33 GB to work with which is like a stranglehold.

Re: NTFS error

Hi MattKirby,
Right click My computer > Manage > Disk Management
POST the harddrive partitions you see. Also is this windows XP disc Sp1 or SP2? Can you supply me with the Make, Model of the computer and the 200 GB HD. I know this is repetitive, but I want to get this proplem nailed down
Thanks,
Bill

Re: NTFS error

Woah woah woah, before you start doing funny stuff. I didn't technically double post. the only reason I posted the problem twice is because they are seperate problems and both are unrelated in the fact that they are different. one belongs in the XP support and the other one belongs here. I like this forum alot this is my go to place for when I'm in trouble Ireccomend you guys all the time. I don't want to get off on a bad foot but the only reason I double posted was because they are seperate things.

It's a Maxtor 200 GB hard drive,Windows Service Pack 2, It's a Gateway E4000 But I bareboned everything but the intel motherboard and it's processor.(so, it's my baby) I'm not overly sure what you mean by partitions but it says it's 'healthy' Basic Type, NTFS,Exact hard drive is 31.49 GB and I have 8.32 GB left (Downloaded a small game and an IM service.)

Also, I don't really have a spyware or anti virus >.> lol which is the main reason I had done the restore because a virus took out my defrag and my chkdsk. which is phenominal but now it's gone. I plan on getting mcaffee when the glitchy stuff stops. but maybe I should get ti asap.

Re: NTFS error

Thanks for the info MattKirby.
I am not the one to make the call about the posting issue, but I think alot of the problems you are having is with this HD issue, thus relating to your lag problem. Lets start a clean slate and see if we can get these issues resolved.
First off lets look at this Mobo. Can you give me the specs (Model, Make, CPU), If this is the original mobo from this Gateway please supply the service tag, part #, or serial #. Also is this the only HD (your previous post said you had 260GB, a 200GB and a 60GB)? I am not sure if you changed this.
Again, I am sorry for being repetitive, but I need to start this on a clean slate. I hope you will be patient and we will get this thing to run the right way.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: NTFS error

No problem to me reptitive is good because it gets the point across. I recently found out that the 60 GB harddrive was bogging down my computer like you wouldn't believe so I just layed it aside for a rainy day.

Gateway E4000
Serial# 0028410345
It is an intel chipset specification I do not currently know. I have a Nvidia 6200 Graphics card I'm a bit of a gamer if I do say so myself. And for part# I'm not crystal on what that means.

Hi Mike & Matt

No problem Mike I will see what we can do to resolve this HD problem and let you know.

Matt give me a few minutes to see what I can find on this Mobo. I am assuming this is a IDE HD and not a SATA. Correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: NTFS error

Ok Matt
Thanks for the info. Is this HD set as a master on the secondary IDE cable? and is it the only drive on this cable. If it is go back to Disk management. Does the HD show multiple partitions or any unallocated space? Can you give me the part # off the HD.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: NTFS error

I set it for master and in the bios it is recognized as primary master on the primary cable (the one not directly or firstly connected to the motherboard itself.) If I'm right on the unallocated space then I would have roughly 177 GB of unallocated space. I'm not sure where to look for multiple partitions. But it says with a little blue box on the bottom bar in the manager of mycomputer Primary partition.

here's a screenshot. I'm not sure if you guys support spoiler tags.

EDIT: you don't

Re: NTFS error

Thanks for the screen shot.
Something it definitly wrong here. This HD is only showing as a 35GB HD (Like you have stated). There is no unallocated space. Are you sure this is the original Mobo. Do me a favor and run EVEREST off my link. I want to see what we have inside this machine. Please post the results.
Thanks
Bill

Re: NTFS error

That's a little barrier we seem to have. I'm not overly sure what mobo means. I'm at school right now so I can't run everest but I googled Mobo and it still comes up a little greek to me. Can you clear up the definition ? I will be back on my computer in little under 2 hours. Then I'll run and either repost or EDIT based on if you reply or not.

Re: NTFS error

Hi Matt,
MoBo is ment for the Motherboard. Running Everest will give me a good idea as to what we have in this case. Seeing from your previous post that either your 200 GB HD is faulty or the Mobo (motherboard) is not the one that came with this PC. It maybe an older one and does not see it as a 200gb HD, just part of it. In either case the Everest report will help me out. If you are unable to run Everest, try BELARC ADVISOR (google it and run it, post the results).
Thanks,
Bill

Re: NTFS error

Alright, its like less than an hour before I get to the comp but I'll tell you a couple things that might be important.
1. I looked the computer itself is registered at 9/17/02
2. I registerred my processor onto seagate.com so the harddrive is confirmed as 200 gb so says seagate.com
3. I'm almost certain that the motherboard is the starter one because I built the computer but boguht the motherboard and intel with the computer barebone off ebay. I know it's not faulty because I've used it for sometime and the harddrive which I also got from ebay is legit due to the box it came in unopened and such.

Like said before I'll either edit this post with results or repost.

Re: NTFS error

Hi Matt,
Don't get frustrated. will get this yet. I checked your specs and they all look good. I know you have been through this a zillion times, but I want you to look at this HD setup. Take a look at this link:

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...00dd04090aRCRD

On this link you will also see a link to the jumper settings (about the middle of the page) Make sure the jumper is set correctly.

Also make sure you are using the correct IDE Cable. It should have a blue connection (motherboard), Gray (slave) and a BLACK (Master). The blue should be connected to the Mobo and the Black to the HD.
Post back please with what you find.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: NTFS error

It's already like that. I've had it like this when I formatted and restarted it. I'm very much frustrated lol.
The only thing I can overly define is this. The mother board has to IDE cable inserts one is closer to the motherboard (closer to the center) and one is farther. The one that is closer in is the secondary cable and I connected that to my disk drive.s The one thats on the outer edge is connected to my hard drive and is recognized as primary master hard drive in the BIOS settings menu.
