replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
HP Pavilion ze4947wm-b - windows xp
Toshiba MK6025GAS (60GB) hard drive sounds like it's possessed and never seems to make the same noise twice, but I know it's a goner. My files are backed up to my external hard drive and I'm ready to take the plunge. I have replaced two hard drives in the past, but it's been a long time. One was a Dell desktop and the other a Thinkpad. For new drive have purchased a Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" 80GB drive, but it did not come with any instructions and wondering about the best source for detailed instructions and any special details I might need to know about - ie, do I need to make any changes to Bios, etc? Not afraid to tackle it, but I am a novice and appreciate all the help I can get. Devan |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
Hi,
It sound like it is an IDE HD. Be sure all power supplies (including Battery) is disconnected! You should just beable to insert the new HD, reasseble and hookup the power supply and battery and boot up and go into your BIOS. Make sure the BIOS detects the new HD. Then be sure the boot order is set to boot from CD-Rom first and then the HD. Reboot and install your OS disk into the CD-Rom and your off. Let us know how you make out |

Where I am now: Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
I am such a novice at this and probably have no business trying to do this myself. This is where I am right now - does this sound right? Screen says:
Windows XP Home Edition Setup PLEASE WAIT WHILE SETUP FORMATS THE PARTITION C: Partition 1 <NEW (RAW)> 76309 MB (76308 MB Free) on 76317 MB DISK 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi <MBR> With a line going across saying "Setup is formatting" & at about 30% now Any feedback would be appreciated. . . . . . Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
YA, It may take awhile to format this DRIVE, Did you choose the full format NTFS when prompted! That is the one you should use If you wanted just one Drive.

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
Great, Let me know when it is up and running. Did you use or have the driver CD for this laptop? The XP Install is the easy part. Getting all the correct drivers is the challenging part.
Are you up for the Challenge! You should be, your doing great so far! thanks, Bill |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
Had to take a break from it and back at it this morning. I am installing the driver CD now. I also created a copy of my old hard drive on my external drive (the old drive would still boot up when I changed it out yesterday, so I was lucky there). I'm hoping to restore my settings and put back what I need as I go, weeding out a lot of the junk that has accumulated over the past couple of years.

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
Great devan,
I was not sure if you had the drivers or not. Check your device manager to see if you got them all in and working. I would also do a complete update on the Microsoft Update site before transffering your files off the external HD. Make sure you do not have any viruses or spyware on this HD before you transfer. Let me know how you make out. Thanks, Bill |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
It's been slow - a lot of trial and error - but devices are working and have my major programs/files restored. Still a lot of tweaking to do, but so far so good and the new HD is much quieter! I'm very glad to have found this forum as it gave me more confidence to proceed. Thanks for watching over my shoulder, Bill!
I bought this HP two years ago when my Thinkpad died (not new when I got it) right before we were leaving on a trip to Colorado and I had to have one for my work. It was a Walmart Xmas special leftover and I picked it up for under $500 (Celeron processor) - all I could afford at the time. It's slow and now I'm wondering if it's bundled with other devices of questionable quality, too. I'd like to add more memory, but don't want to be foolish and spend more money on it than it's worth. Would love a new one and need the convenience of a notebook. I don't use it for gaming and money is an issue, but wondering what you might recommend as a good, reliable replacement? |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
Hi devan,
There are many laptops that are out there, but as far as a new one they all come with VISTA. I am not a big fan of Vista and the manufactures out there sell thier low end models with only 512MB of ram. Vista needs to have over 1GB of ram just to perform efficently. Many people are attempting to down grade to XP on these new laptops because of performance issues with Vista, only to find out the big manufactures do not Support XP Drivers for a Vista Machine. I know off no new machine that comes with XP pre installed. AS far as adding RAM to your machine, Can you tell me how much is in there now. Thanks, Bill |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
That's what I was afraid of, Bill. When I realized that my Quickbooks 2005 wouldn't run on Vista it was the deciding factor for replacing the HD in my Pavilion. I did read somewhere that MS was extending the time to sell new computers with XP, but couldn't find any in my initial search.
It has a 1.3 gigahertz Celeron M processor and came with 256 MB RAM and an empty slot. I've never added memory to a notebook, but guess there's no reason not to give it a try, huh? |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
I would put the extra memory in. This laptop will perform a little better. Here is a link to give you an idea on what you need and the Max it will take.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...434896&lang=en I am not sure how many applications you are running, but if you go to the task manager (Ctrl>Alt>Del at the same time) and click on the performance tab, look at the PF Usage. I bet you will be close to the amount of installed ram you have now (256) especially if you open up another application. Let me know, Thanks, Bill |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
Thanks, Bill. I do think I'll wait on a new one and spend a bit more on this one.
With all the stuff that runs in the background, it does hang up if I get too many apps going at the same time, which I often do - Quickbooks, Excel, etc. Looks like I can go to a max of 1024MB SDRAM. Since it only came with 256MB, do I have to go with another 256MB - or can I go to 512MB for the 2nd module? devan |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
Hi Devan,
You should beable to up the second module with a 512 MB stick. This will deffently help you with multiple apps running. Thanks, Bill |

Re: replacing my HP Pavilion hard drive
I'm sure I overpaid for it, but don't have many options where I live - so went to Office Depot yesterday and got 512MB more memory (after spending so much time on it with the hard drive, my patience was at an end and I needed an immediate fix!) Seems to be working fine and has definitely improved the speed of my computer.
I do have a couple of questions about memory, though - since I can return this within 14 days. Should I post it to another section or is it OK to ask it here? |
