Re: Hard drive grates on start up

Good Morning Ashleigh,

That Hard Drive diagnostic report does not show anything untoward with your Hard Drive,...this is indeed Good News!

I need you to explain a little more about this 'grating' at the start up....

Is the 'grating' only a momentary sound while there are 'black' screens 'flashing' just before the Windows® Splash Screen appears, or is it a continual noise while the computer is operating?

Please clarify this point.

Kind Regards,

Re: Hard drive grates on start up

G'day Dave, thanks for the great news!

I'll try to explain in detail what occurs. The grating is only a short, sharp sound, lasting for about a second, maybe less. It only ever occurs during startup, and not at all after that.

It grates twice in close succession after the bios screen has gone, just as the blue welcome screen appears. The welcome screen hangs for about 10 seconds before my user account appears. When I click on my user name, it grates twice again before the desktop appears. Once the desktop appears, there is no further grating.

That is the best I can describe it from memory. There may possibly be an extra 'grate' in there somewhere during the startup process. Thanks again.

Re: Hard drive grates on start up

Hi Ashleigh,

Well the news gets better!! (In my opinion anyway)

I have 3 Seagate™ Hard Disc Drives that do exactly the same as yours...it is an inherit idiocyncrasy with them, and nothing at all to be overly concerned about.

Seagate™ themselves have told me that it is quite normal, for them to 'grate' whilst "spinning up", and nothing to be concerned about.

So there you are...problem solved. (hopefully)

Kind Regards,

Re: Hard drive grates on start up

Hi Dave, that is terrific news.

Thank you very much for your knowledge, help and patience over the past week. I can basically keep my computer running smoothly, but (as you have seen) am completely clueless as to the inner workings and technical side of things.

Based on your expertise, I will put away those brochures I was browsing for a new hard drive, and mark this thread solved.

Thanks again.
