I need info from an old hard drive.How?

My mothers cpu was struck by lightning. She would like to retrieve her lost files. I told her I would try to help. Can anyone help me out.

Well, "if" it is functional, you can either hook it up on your own computer as a slave drive and copy the files to a DVD or something.

Or you can get an external USB case and plug her drive into that.

Yes, but firewire is just one of the options. There's also USB, which is more common and less costly.

I don't have the ability to burn cd or dvd's on my cpu. So I would have to use some kind of removable storage to store the retrieved data. How hard is it to slave the hard drive?

Slaving the drive is pretty easy. You just put her hard drive in your computer and adjust the jumper settings on the back of the drives.

You should be done within a couple of minutes.

And yes, you will need some sort of removable storage to place your mom's data.

But DVD burners nowadays only cost about $33.
