Maxtor 1.5 terabyte fat 32

Hell, I am new here and through looking on other forums I found my way here. I have a question regarding format of this external HD from NTSF to FAT 32..

I bought this HD for the sole purpose to hold 300- gigs of music and over 500 DVD movies to be viewed and played through my PS3.. In order to get the HD to work on a PS3 it needs to be FAT 32. So I found that XP will not format to FAT 32 I downloaded CompuApps Swissknife V3 to format to FAT 32. After a format from NTSF to FAT 32 my computer and PS3 only sees 393Meg..

Does anyone know of a solution using Swissknife V3 that will allow the 1.5 Terabyte to be recognized? Thanks for any help as this is the first time that I have ventured into making a sole HD specifically for the PS3.

My goal is to have each folder a entrance point to either a movie or music file so that my Theater system with be completely remote with no disks involved.

Re: Maxtor 1.5 terabyte fat 32

Hi there and welcome to TSF.
One of the problems with FAT32 is that it only recognises partitions up to 32 GB which is why NTFS was brought in, although I believe on some OSs it can go to 2TB. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with PS3s, nor with Swissknife for that matter. One thing I would say is that it is very dangerous to put all your eggs in one basket. If this drive fails, and I'm afraid they all do eventually, you've lost an awful lot of data. You would be better off with two smaller drives, with one a copy of the other. It's a bit late for that now as you are already committed, but I would think seriously about getting another drive when you can to back up all your music, DVDs etc.

Re: Maxtor 1.5 terabyte fat 32

As far as losing Data/music/video I have all on separate HD's in a storage computer.. The new 1.5 Terabyte is for my Theater system and before I spend countless hours loading Video and Music I will be sure that what I am looking for this to do is full proof.. I guess my main question is there a third party program that will read NTSF and output FAT 32 . PS3 will only work in FAT 32 but the whole concept of the media center is awesome. I do not game with it but have it for video use plus a computer system dedicated to my theater system.

If I format to FAT 32 it will not read the storage as 1.5 Terabytes.. it goes to 399 meg. So I like to keep the HD a NTSF format but use a third person program that will allow the NTSF format to act like a FAT 32.

I wonder if some of the people in the gaming forums would have more idea as they are likely to have more experience of PS3s. I'll get someone to have a look.

There's no one on from the gaming forums at present but I'll leave a note for someone when they come online.

Are you wanting to put this internally into the PS3 or have it as an attached drive for the console?

The PS3 only takes 2.5" SATA, up to 7000rpm, Harddrives if you want to mount the drive internally.

Re: Maxtor 1.5 terabyte fat 32

This is an external 1.5 Terabyte HD.. I think what I am going to have to do is to make three partitions with the FAT 32 format to achieve what I want.. Keeping the Drives in Raid 0
