Re: this is totally insane...hardrive recognition
Hi,
Happy 16th and welcome to the forum Can you post the specs of your PC. Run EVEREST if you can and post the results. Here is a link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html Also when you installed the 20gb harddrive did you set the jumpers correctly on both drives (Master / Slave)? Thanks, Bill |

Re: this is totally insane...hardrive recognition
Can you tell me:
1. How many harddrives(size and type) 2. How are they connected, Master ? (Which HD) Slave? (Which HD) 3. To which type of cable (Is this a 80 pin cable or a 40 pin). I am assuming you are trying to add a 20GB hd as a slave (It must be jumpered as a slave). Check the other HD and make sure it it jumpered as a Master. The Master should be at the end of the Primary (80 pin) cable and the Slave in the middle. Also can you tell me what OS you are using and the serial number of this PC Thanks, Bill Last edited by BCCOMP; 08-20-2007 at 02:17 PM. |

Re: this is totally insane...hardrive recognition
srry about the delay i had an airsoft tournament on the 20 and didnt get back until last night about 11pm so srry for the delay
ok welll the originals that were in the computer whne i got it were a 6.5g "western digital wd caviar 26400" - (15 heads) and the other one was a 1.8g but it didnt have a name and or any identification. the 1.8g is the master wi has the o/s on it and then i dont know whats on the but there are 1 less jumper pin on these hard drives than the ibm desk stars (2) 20g hard drives and another thing i noticed...is that when the westerdigital is being used it is slave so it showes up as the d drive. it has a symbol of a cd with the windows logo in the top left of the image...instead of the default hard drive icon...sryy but i dont know what you mean by 80 pin or40 pin cable this may sound totally absurd .the serial number for the pc is - 0012990943 o and i almost forgot its just running win 98 for now until i get xp |

Re: this is totally insane...hardrive recognition
If you can download the Everest report this would help out alot. You are dealing with an old PC and the MoBo may not reconize the 20gb harddrives. Do you have a 98 install CD? I would not reccomend XP until I am able to see your PC specs.
Thanks, Bill |

Re: this is totally insane...hardrive recognition
Hi,
As BCCOMP says - you have to make sure the jumpers are set correctly on the drives (there's usually a "jumper manual" printed on hard drives). The new drive should be jumpered as slave and connected to the middle of the cable. The "old" drive (with Windows on it?) then has to be set as master and connected to the end of the cable. Make sure they're not jumpered as "cable select". The "80 pin" IDE cable is the one you use to connect the drives to the motherboard. It's better to use a "80 pin" cable with bigger drives. Here's the support site for your computer: http://support.gateway.com/support/a...?sn=0012990943 |
