Confused External Hard drive

I have a hard drive out of my old computer that is still good, what I want to know is where I can buy a holder for it so I can plug it in to one of my USB Ports and get some of the things off of it and maybe use it for a second hard drive.
And what do I ask for in finding this,
Thanks for any help

Re: External Hard drive

Hi,

There are numerous different make external hard drive enclosures. Take a look at Newegg or e-buyer. Even Amazon will sell them.

The only thing to watch for is that you have to set the drive jumpers to Master with all external drive enclosures.

Cable select slave etc does not normally work.

Thank you for answering me but I don't know how to set drive jumpers, don't even know what that means, I think I better just forget it,and just get rid of the hard drive,

Re: External Hard drive

Hi,

Har drive jumpers are very easy to set.

On the rear of the drive next to the IDE connection there will be a small row of normally 8 pins in two rows of four. Small Plastic connectors with metal terminals fit over these pins to confifure the drive.

On the drive there will be a label or engravings to show what the various pins and configurations are for.

Simple guide here

Re: External Hard drive

I thought I could just buy a case and plug it into my computer by a USB port, boy was I wrong, I am one that knows how to do things on the computer but when it comes to putting things in like a hard drive I am lost.
I have a almost new burner I would like to install too since this computer only came with one. I guess I will wait for my grandson to come fisit, he builds his own computers.

Thanks for trying to help me.
