Re: portable hdd
I think you'd have to talk to the Network Admin .. are you just trying to plug it into a USB on a UNI PC or gain access over the net?
As far as I know .. you can't change the type of drive unless the drive itself changes .. what about using a flashdrive ?

Re: portable hdd
local disk is for any disk that is attached to your PC if it hasn't been given an alternative name .. but it's the way that drives are recognized and not the way they are represented that is the problem ..
Because of risks of viral infection admin tries to limit the ways that data can be accessed or retrieved .. I have been to net cafe's where I could not save my files to my flash disk .. the only thing that could be done was to arrange to have the data saved to a CD before leaving .. the net PC stays virus free but at the cost of upsetting the customer .. Our rules forbid us to encourage or help the circumvention of any form of security measures including passwords and limitations placed upon users by network admin .. so all I can offer you is tat you speak to your admin people again or use whatever methods they allow you ..
