Recovering some lost files from hard drive
So, today my computer was tweaking out and I decided to do a full system recovery. I wasnt sure if it would delete all my files and I didnt really care. When everything was up and running the computer showed I had 25 GB left on my hard drive (roughly how much I had before the system recovery) leading me to believe that all my stuff WASNT deleted. Problem is now I cant find any of my old files even after doing searches and going through my hard drive.
I even ran the WinDirStat to make sure I was getting the correct amount of space left. It too showed that I had 25 GB left in my HD (out of 224 GB). The problem is when the total stored in the Hard drive only amounted to ~83 GB, leaving arounf 100GB missing (which I'm guessing includes my collection of movies and music which I stored in seperate files on my desk top which I can no longer find ANYWHERE on my computer!) Please help me find this! I mean how hard can it be to find 100 GB of files! I'm currently running on Windows XP btw. |

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
Check in Disk Management for any unformated or unpartitioned space. The partition could only be about 30 GB with other raw unused space.

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
download getdataback from www.runtime.org
that program has a free scanner you can run; if the program can see your data then pay the purchase price ($39.00) and it will restore your drives contents good luck and keep us posted

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
Disk Management is telling me the same thing. 25 GB left when there should be more like 125 GB! I dont know how I would go about looking for unformatted or unpartitioned space
I'll try the run time scanner, though it looks pretty advanced for me |

Post a screenshot of Disk Management.

There you go, its now reading 19 GB because I just re-installed some software that I needed. Still, should be over 100 GB. The computer will only show me the files that were specifically in the HP Pavillion folder before the recovery. Everything else seems lost but i still dont have the storage used by the files. It's weird |

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
You have no unpartitioned space.
Check WinDirStat for very big single files. Post a screenshot of WinDirStat. If that isn't it, you might want to run through the 5-step process and post a log. http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html

There you go. As you can see WinDirStat tells me that I only have 19GB left out of my 224 GB hard drive, but will only show me 90 GB of files! It's a mystery Last edited by kschumac; 07-19-2007 at 07:49 PM. |

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
Go through the files. Do things like clicking on that big green square and seeing where its located. If you can find the directory where all the files are that are taking up your space, we can delete them if they are unnecessary.

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
That wont really help my situation, though. All those colorful squares just represent the 90 Gigs recognized by WinDirStat. I could delete everything and I'm still going to end up with about 100 GB of missing files.

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
So I ran my computer through the Panda Active Scan and the scanner actually detected my lost files (i could recognize the names as it was scanning through my computer). I couldnt find the file path though as it would only show the partial title of each file.
So this stuff is somewhere on my computer. Does anyone know of a program that will list EVERYTHING on my computer? I just need to know where all this stuff is hiding. It's like my computer knows its there, but it just didnt make a folder for it and it's floating around in my hard drive somewhere. My computer still wont find the files when I do a search, though. GetDataBack scares me too much. No offense but I really dont want to spend $40 for someone to find something on my computer. I'd rather just erase my HD and start fresh if it comes to that. If Active Scan can find the files there should be some other software that can identify where they are located. Last edited by kschumac; 07-20-2007 at 03:22 PM. |

someone to find your files ????????? YOU are the someone ![]() nobody else can see your files ??????? ![]() the scanner is a program that verifes whats wrong with your drive, it scans your drive much like the panda thing or defrag does if YOU can see all your files you want back >>>>> then you pay for the full version of the program which then has a "restore" button in the program commands >>>>> the trial version has no restore button http://www.practicalpc.co.uk/reviews...etdataback.htm good luck >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Re: Recovering some lost files from hard drive
Yeah I get that and everything. I just dont see how paying $40 to find something that's ALREADY on (and all likelyhood easily found if one knows what they are doing) on my computer is justifiable. I'm a cheapskate, what can I say.
I think the program appeals more to those people who have accidentally recycled things and want them back. I'm dumb, but not THAT dumb. Thanks for both of your help though |
