Hard drive problems

Hi

Recently my computer started to have problems and everything pointed towards the hard drive being at fault.
I ran the manufacturers diagnostics and it found multiple errors.

I replaced the hard drive with a working drive and at first it worked fine but when i ran windows update and had to reboot it just froze on the memory test screen.

Now when i turn it on it just freezes on the memory test.

The original drive will get as far as the windows xp title page and then it reboots.

Any ideas?

Re: Hard drive problems

Hi,

Are you referring to the POST? If so, then try running with only one stick of memory, then the other.

Re: Hard drive problems

Hi again

Its the part of the POST where it says testing memory where it freezes with the second HD installed, but when i put the original HD back in it goes as far as the Windows xp title page.

I cant try one stick at a time, i've only got one.

I tried the original HD in another machine and it does the same.

Re: Hard drive problems

When you put the second hard drive in, does it have an OS on it or did you just bring it from another machine without doing a repair/Install?

Re: Hard drive problems

Hi

The second HD has got ME on it, original HD has XP.

I didn't do a repair/install. Just swapped them straight over.

When i first switched it back on it seemed to work fine on ME, but when i rebooted after doing windows update it started freezing.

Re: Hard drive problems

Try a repair install. It is likely a driver conflict.

Re: Hard drive problems

That helps to know that. I agree with TheMatt, so you need to do that to see if that solved the issue.

Re: Hard drive problems

Dear Sir,

After BIOS running the system is showing " No HPA Drive found". Please suggest me how to recover data from the Hard Disk.

Thanks,
