Re: Maxtor 40 gig problem
Try going to Control panel>>power options>> and make sure that the Hdd's are not set to turn off. That would cause a delay as you describe as the hdd spins up from being idle.

Re: Maxtor 40 gig problem
try:
control panel > system > > advanced > performance click adjust for best performance How old is this system? Do you have norton installed? ![]() Some extra ram is always preferable.

Re: Maxtor 40 gig problem
Just to be safe, back up all your data ASAP. What you have said isn't normally a sign of total failure, but one never knows when a hard drive acts up. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Maxtor 40 gig problem
As long as you ran the Maxtor tools, it is a decent bet. However, I would still back it up because I know what it is like to lose everything from a drive that is even operating without fault. Your choice.

Re: Maxtor 40 gig problem
Could also be that your pci bus is saturated, it may be time to add some memory if you can 384Mb of memory is barely enough to have XP working, much less play any games 1Gb would be ideal if your mobo supports it. Also make sure you are using an 80 pin ide cable.

Re: Maxtor 40 gig problem
It should, but consider a memory upgrade before hdd upgrade. Also, since you have onboard graphics I susspect the bus saturation is your most likely problem, its a dated mobo, multitasking is going to be a problem with only a 533 fsb (ie video, music and programs) more memory will help a bit, but it may be time to consider a more robust mobo & upgrades to keep up with your useage & needs

Re: Maxtor 40 gig problem
I totally understand (been furloghed for 2 years myself) The 5200 is a stable card, but keep all the eye candy turned off for best performance, its no match for current games
