Double my pleasure
I have a Dell e521 with a 250GB SATA drive - 8 mb cache.
I bought a 250GB SATA drive with a 16mb cache. I want to use the 16mb as the boot and the 8mb as additional storage. Do I need to move the drives around or just let the BIOS select which one becomes the boot drive? Are jumper settings any concern with a SATA drive? Thanks for the help. |

Re: Double my pleasure
I would simply clone the boot drive to the second drive with XXClone: http://www.techsupportforum.com/info...ve-to-another/
Then reformat the old drive to remove the Windows installation. Honestly, though, it might not be worth it just for the 16 MB cache.

Re: Double my pleasure
yes / the bios selects which drive to boot from, regardless of jumpoer settings
sata drives dont have jumper settings >>>>> they are the only device on their own dedicated channel IDE channels can be shared with two devices, thats why they need jumpers to designate priority but a slave can be made to boot first with bios settings ![]() and I seconds Tumble's advice >>>>> I wouldnt run too many miles worth of effort to boot from the 16mb cache drive -VS- the 8mb cache drive >>>>> if you "see" a diff it will be very slight

Re: Double my pleasure
The cache will only improve the burst transfer rate (small files accessed frequently). The media and sustained transfer rates will remain the same as long as the number of sectors per track are the same. They likely are since the drives are both the same size.
