recover crashed hard disk data

Hi. Recently my Maxtor 40gb IDE hard disk which had two partitions, one for the system files which is (C:), one for storage (D:), crashed while I was transferring a large amount of important data from My Documents in C to D:. The error was "Data Error Cyclic Redundancy Check." After that I could not open XP anymore.

So, I plugged the HD as a Slave to my brother's computer and changed the Security settings so that I could access it and recover the files. But in the process, my house suddenly experienced a power outage. During reboot, the computer could not access my HD saying the sector is unreadable. The system partition was unreadable, but the storage partition can still be accessed.

How can I recover the data in My Documents now? Or is it even accessible? Thanks.

Re: recover crashed hard disk data

Hi and welcome to TSF

Try TestDisk and see if you can repair the drive/partition.

Re: recover crashed hard disk data

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

So, the program helps to repair the partition? Will it delete the files I want recovering?

Re: recover crashed hard disk data

No, it will not delete the files - not as long as you're careful. It will let you rebuild/repair the part of the drive where the "inventory" is (if possible).

Re: recover crashed hard disk data

okay. so I asked it to Analyze the partition. it creates a log -testdisk - and this is what's inside it. part of it actually, the process somehow slows down my computer.

Re: recover crashed hard disk data

It looks like you can retrieve the files. Read this.
