Programs run slower on new hard drive.
Alright, here's my problem: I purchased a WD 1600BEVE 2.5" HD for my laptop. After putting it in my laptop, I installed a game on it. When I played it, it ran really, really choppy (like less then 10 FPS and input from the keyboard took forever to respond). At first, I thought it might have been excess programs running in the background so I shut them all off which didn't fix the problem. I then updated my video and sound drivers, and that didn't do anything either. At that point, I put my old hard drive back into my laptop (a Hitachi 60 Gig, don't have the model number but it runs at 4200 RPM, slower then the new WD drive) and ran the game - it ran at a smooth 38 FPS with all the details cranked up. I installed the same new drivers onto the old hard drive just to see if that was the problem: It still ran smooth.
I decided to get more technical and checked the UDMA settings. Both drives ran at Mode 5 for the primary (Yes, this is an IDE drive) and Mode 2 for secondary, so that can't be the problem. I contacted the guy I purchased the drive from and he said any damage would cause the drive to not function at all. Oh, just to let you know this is not just with this particular game this a problem with but other programs and file transfering are slow. Could the new drive be taking up more system resources or is there another culprit? I hope this can be fixed. |

Re: Programs run slower on new hard drive.
The guy you bought it from could of done something to mess it up format it to a regular NTFS and see if that helps

Re: Programs run slower on new hard drive.
The hard drive was brand-new and sealed in the plastic bag. I didn't format it, but I popped in the recovery disc for my laptop and I think it automatically formats it to NTFS, but I'll see. Even if I format it outside of my laptop I still have to use the recovery disc because Windows XP is on it.

Re: Programs run slower on new hard drive.
I just ran PerformanceTest on both hard drives (while they were installed in the computer). The Western Digital drive was faster but was much slower at computer graphics (9 fbs) while my original hard drive was slower but faster at computer graphics (21 fps). I wonder what's up with that?
