[resolved]My magic disappearing hard drive.

Amd X2-4400
ASRock DualSata2
2048Mb DDR
256Mb Geforce 7600GS
2x 80Gb Maxtor (IDE)
1x 200Gb Maxtor (SATA2)

I custom built my pc about 6months ago and it has been absolutely faultless, until recently. The other day i switched my pc on and everything booted up seemingly normal. Until i attempted to use a file stored on m E:\ (The 200Gb Sata2 drive) as this is where i store all my music and videos and downloads and the suchlike. To my horror up popped an error message saying that the drive was not available.

So i switched off and checked all the connections to ensure that nothing was lose and fired it up again, whilst watching the bios run through its checks i noticed that the bios had detected the hard drive, but when windows fired up again alas it was missing.

I've tried everything i can think of but am coming up with no resolution so i now leave it in the hands of you guys to help me.

No music is driving me INSANE! Please help!

Re: My magic disappearing hard drive.

Two things that come to mind...
1. Faulty HDD
2. Your power Supply is not supplying enough power

Re: My magic disappearing hard drive.

As much as would love to believe its the powersupply, i can't really see it being that as is rated at 600w and i've checked my draw level and its not passed 400w yet.

That said i'm praying that its not the hdd failing as that'd be the second death in 12months and the 2nd time i'll have lost all my files.

Re: My magic disappearing hard drive.

Try this then.. Take the HDD out of your PC and put it in another pc (a friends will do if you dont have another pc). If it work in a different pc then theres something wrong with your motherboard

Re: My magic disappearing hard drive.

i'll try that as soon as i find someone with a motherboard that has sata connections.

not gonna be easy though as all my friends seem to be technophobes with computers that don't have the necessary connections. Lol

That said if anyone else has more ideas what to try PLEASE post em as i'm getting ready to throw the hdd through a window, lol

Re: My magic disappearing hard drive.

i appear to have fixed the fault, it appaears that when it went faulty i reinstalled a buggy driver (something i was previously unaware of)

i have installed a newer one and all seems to be well again
