Question Hard drive problems

There is a problem with my PC, the HD crashed and I placed a new HD. The new HD is as Master and the old crashed one is as Slave installed. Two years ago I have used the same setup and I could get in that way the data out of the old HD. After installing the new HD now windows does not recognize the old HD. When I look in the System management and in the BIOS (I have added a screen shot) the old and the new HD are present. But the old HD has not got a “Station Letter”. When I us the right click on the mouse I can not make the choice to change the Station letter or Pad change.
How can help me?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Hard drive problems

A couple of questions.

First of all, are they both IDE drives?

Second, how do you have them hooked up (for example, both on the Primary IDE or one on the Primary IDE and one on the Secondary IDE) to the motherboard?

Where on the cable is each located (end or middle connector) when hooked up?

Please list specs including the motherboard and brand names of drives please!

Re: Hard drive problems

Yes they are both IDE drives.
Both on the Primary IDE.
The new one Hitachi is first and the the old one Westren Digital is on the end of the cable.
The pc is a Sony VAIO pcv-rx407.
The motherbord is:
Manufacturer : Sony Corporation
Mainboard : Asus P4S533VX
Bios : Award Software, Inc.
Chipset : SiS 651
Physical Memory : 1024 MB DDR-SDRAM
LPC bus : Yes
PCI Bus : Yes
AGP Bus : Yes
USB Bus : Yes
SMBus/i2c Bus : Yes
Bus HyperTransport : No
Bus CardBus : No

I hoop this is the info you needed.

Re: Hard drive problems

Try again. Place the Hitachi (new drive with OS) as master with the jumpers and place it on the END of the ribbon cable. The WD would have it's jumpers set to SLAVE and placed on the MIDDLE connector of the cable. That should get you going.

Note: I suspect that your new drive (they come that way) is set to Cable Select so you need to change those jumpers to master.

Post back with questions/concerns.

Re: Hard drive problems

Have changed the place of the HD's on the ribbon cable as you adviced, no result. The jumpers of both HD's are set on the Hitachi for master and on WDC for slave.

What now?

Thanks in advance

Re: Hard drive problems

Clarify a little for me. If you click Start, then right click My Computer, then select Manage, Then select Storage, then select Disk Management, exactly what is in there with it set the way I told you? Are both disks there?
