Problem copying files to my External HD

I just bought and formatted (to NTFS) a 465 GB external HD and today I tried to copy files to it from my main HD. The problem is that it only copies some of the files and then reads other ones as errors. Another problem is that it won't let me safely remove the hardware---it also reads that as an error. I'm lucky that I was only copying the files cuz if I had tried to move them I would have lost the files.

What's wrong with my new HD???

Re: Problem copying files to my External HD

Hi,

Please advise how you are copying the files,

Across a Network, from a media CD or HD

USB laplink

Direct cable connection.

Windows files and settings transfer wizard

Which O/S does each machine have.

How large are the actual files

Re: Problem copying files to my External HD

Hi,
Did you configure the external HDD as 'master' with the jumper?

No. All I did was format the external HD as the instruction manual told me to.

Hi,

Please advise how you are copying the files,

Across a Network, from a media CD or HD

USB laplink

Direct cable connection.

Windows files and settings transfer wizard

USB 2.0

Which O/S does each machine have.

My computer has Windows XP SP Pack 2.

How large are the actual files

Some are big, some aren't. The strange thing is that the errors seem to be random. For example, in one attempt I was able to cpopy all of my Music files successfully but errors showed up midway through copying My Pictures. In the next try, errors showed up midway through trying to re-copy my Music files. The errors always say something along the lines of "cannot open file or read from disk". Then...on top of that...When I try to safely remove the hardware, it gives me an error like "generic volume cannot be removed safely. Try again later."
