partitioning

Ive got a HDD with windows Vista on and i want to partition the HDD into 3 sections ive heard that it will make Vista run a little better.
This is what i want..
Partition 1) Vista OS, Virus protection, firewall (20gb)
Partition 2) Programs (260gb)
Partition 3) Backup data (20gb)

Can i do all of this without having to format or reinstall Vista or any other programs. (Saves time)

Ive got another HDD with 2 partitions already
Partition 1) Pagefile (7gb)
Partition 2) Video files (243gb)
So page file is taken care of.

Thanks

Re: partitioning

Howdy Aus,

You can partiton them, but you will need a third party partition tool to do it without reinstalling the whole os..Somthing like Partition Magic..

I do not know of any free (easy) partitoning tools

Here is the Ultimate Boot Cd, it has Partitoning tools, but you have to be well versed in the programs

A nice tutroial for it as well.

Re: partitioning

Ok. Ive read up on some of these articles. And i think i might be able to do this..
If i uninstall everythink but Vista, virus protection and firewall. and then defrag. Could i shrink the partition down to 20gbs and then create 2 new partitions...
Ive read that if i move Vista to a different partition it may become unstable..
Will this method work.

Re: partitioning

Yes. That will work with Partition Logic (version 0.66 and later) - but, like you said, the system (Vista) partition shouldn't be moved.

Re: partitioning

thanks for letting us know about the own partition tool as I did not know..

I will not be getting Vista for a couple years.. But as for the windows partition I find putting all my program files (ie..virus proggy's dvd tools all programs onto the C partition and making my os on the D partition. This is the fastest way to go but do not know how it would work in Vista.. And I only give XP 5 gigs of space. But Vista needs more..
