The only time I have come across the problem you describe (drive being seen as unusable) is when the hard drive in question is faulty. So, is there some other factor to take into account here, or what?
this is exactly my testimony as well.

why is it i've never ever ever seen this problem, despite using it to partition and format drives that are headed for other pc's?

mine are almost all western digital. where's the connection?

i am testing it again as we speak, just so i can be 101% sure that i know i'm correct.

also, here at my house, reinstalling is a ritual.

we always leave all the partitions in place, (ones that were made with that console) and when we reformat and reinstall xp, the data has ALWAYS been there, on a nice happy ntfs partition.

to answer the fella with the missing partitions. When you are using Partition Table Doctor after you try the free scan there is a button to buy the software for $39.00 its at that point it actually fixes your problems >>> the free scan just gives you the confidence the Doctor can fix your dilemma.

please post back if you have more questions and we can subit a detailed "how to " to run the program.

@ Volt:

I'll bet your using Win XP pro ?????? I am beginning to find this problem occurs the most with Win XP Home Edition

let me know please; I may have to change the warning for Home edition users. After I got thinking about Indoril's response I tried duplicating the missing partitions on a XP pro machine >>> no luck transplanted a slave drive to another machnine without any glitch; however the same attempt was not so successful with my brothers Home Edition slave drive; and when I brought my brothers home edition drive back to his machine >>> his OS couldnt read the drive either >>>>> there was no brotherly love there for the rest of the day (he does not back-up his data well LOL) scared the pants off him LOL but PTTD rescued his slave drive but he is no longer a willing participant to my "tests"

some people just cant take a joke

Are you certain buying the full version will fix the problem? Here's what I get after I try "fixboot":

I thought it would say something like "you need to purchase this program to restore your partitions" but the message sayd that I need another program called "Data Recovery Wizard" Then again, I might be doing something wrong.

I know my hard drive is'nt corrupted, it was fully functionnal before I formatted my other one, and I unplugged it just to make sure the format does'nt affect it. And my partitions are showing with Partition table doctor, so that means they're still there. The problem is I can't access it them anymore in "my computer":

I don't have the full version of Partition Table Doctor, but I have the full version of Partition Magic 8.0 and Acronis Disk Director. Is it possible to fix the problem with one of these? Or any other free program available? I'm not really sure how to use these programs... a small explanation of one of those programs (Maybe Partition Magic, since many seem to know about this one) would be very helpful! Even if it's just "go there, click that, etc" ^_^

I found a better clue of my problem using PartitionMagic: it looks like I'm getting "cross-linked" errors when I scan the disk for errors. But it doesn't seem to work when I try to fix those errors. "File: $LogFile:5,FRS #2", if I choose to delete this file, will it fix the problem? I know I have no file of this name on my hard drive. But just in case, I'll wait for more information before attempting anything. Here's a screenshot:

hello:

if you read here / you will see the Demo version will not fix partition tables that have been messed up. The demo version is just to give you a feel and hopefully some confidence with the program prior to buying

I would not delete, modify any files unless you are able to fully access the drive or partition under windows !!

if you prefer to try a "free" program here is one >>>> it is not as good a PTTD in my opinion
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm

I personally am not able to give accurate instructions in the use of partition magic I have not used it in several years and just dont feel comfortable enough to bet farm while trying to get you out of the woods. Although I am skeptical PM can get you out of that jam.

Sounds like this was the thread I was looking for. I looked at some of ZephirisX screenshots and sounds like I'm is the same jam as well I dont have a credit card so I cant buy programs on the internet but are there any other easy way to restore your slave drives partions atfer formating your master? usualy chkdisk fixes errors but I cant even select the drive to do chkdisk, its as if it was corupted or never formatted. weird.

Please post here if anyone knows how exactly to fix this

edit: not sure if it helps but my drives are both western digital, master is 80gb slave is 200gb.

Hello Chara:

Basically you have two options: get a pre-paid credit card from most banks from which you can purchase Partition Table Doctor (my reccomedation)'

or you could roll the dice with this free version (i dont know if it will work or not and if it doesnt how that failure will impact your recovery ???)

post your progress or further questions >>> goodluck

Actually, I highly recommend "PartitionMagic"! After trying many options, I've been able to recover about 3/4 of all the data on my slave drive! "Browse partition" worked for one partition, so that helped a lot, I managed to to copy those files on my master drive and burn them on DVD. I'm still working on saving the remaining 1/4, if I succeed, I'll format the whole slave drive afterwards and recopy all the files on it. NO PARTITIONS this time, this recovery process is way too much trouble, I don't ever want to waste time doing that again ^_^

Well 40$ is a bit expensive for just a program I might be using once (yeah I know I'm cheap) so if there's any option to fix this free, i'll try that first. Downloading pcinspector right now, is it really unsafe to use? I mean, have you used it before and something happened? Or you just think its unsafe?

@ Chara:

I think I may have made my statement misleading or ambigious. PC Inspector is great software. And you stand a great chance of fixing your problem; I dont know the value of your drive's contents.

I should have stated this : if the contents of your drive are critical to you; then pay the $40.00 and go with the "best" choice >>>> other wise PC Inspector is my next choice.

goodluck and let us know your findings

I like the raw simplicity of FDISK. I know it is primitive but it has never failed me.
