SATA optical drives on SATA 150. OK? [RESOLVED]

To improve air flow in my case, I want to get rid of the ide optical drives (and their cables) My motherboard has 4 SATA 3.0Gb/s connections (which are reserved for RAID 0+1 and 4 SATA 150 connections which are not being used.

If I buy new SATA optical drives and connect them to SATA 150, will they preform properly? (no loss of data transfer speed) I seem to remember something about optical drives not being as fast as regular hard drives.

Thumbs Up Re: SATA optical drives on SATA 150. OK?

I couldn't swear to it as I don't know any number's but it should be fine, I have a Sata optical drive and can't personally say I've noticed much different in speed either way, so unless theres something technical about this I don't know about it should be fine IMO.

Re: SATA optical drives on SATA 150. OK?

no optical drive is as fast as a hard drive

but Sata drives are just as fast if not faster than an IDE drive

however; you should keep your old IDE drive in storage where you can find it, when the day comes you need to perform a fresh install of windows you will want that IDE drive for a temporary. During a fresh install on a hard drive the OS has no drivers to make a sata controller work the optical drive; therefore you cant boot into the windows CD

other than that; you have a great plan

Check and make sure your optical drive is compatible with your SATA controller. Some SATA controllers will only work with HDDs.

Re: SATA optical drives on SATA 150. OK?

Why not just purchase the better IDE cable? Belkin makes some nice round IDE cables. Not to take away from SATA drives as I have three SATA optical drives myself, but only because I built them that way. MY P3 board has IDE everything and I have the round cables on them as well as a round floppy cables. I have a bunch of ribbon cables.......in storage.

Re: SATA optical drives on SATA 150. OK?

Thanks for the replys. I had not thought about the new install problem.. Maybe I will combine both suggestions... buy 1 new SATA optical drive (I want a LightScribe burner) and keep 1 ide drive on a single ended round cable. It works for me.. Now if I can just get it to work for the computer... LOL

I have the information I need.. You can close the thread. Thanks!
