Very Slow PC with 2x HDD's

PC:

P4 3.0GHZ HT
2GB RAM
9600XT 256 Video
2x DVD RW LG Drives
1x 250GB Sata2 Drive - 2x Paritions - C: o/s
1x 300GB Samsung IDE drive 1x Partition - Movies

Since the 2nd hdd has been put into my machine it slows down the whole system to basic grinding hault whenever I access anything on the 2nd hard drive. With having movies on it, the machine plays these movies very slowly, sometimes half the speed needed and seems to be worse with the bigger files that it plays (higher khz)

These problems are non existant when the 2nd HDD is removed.

Also takes my PC nearly three times longer to boot up from startup.

Can anyone help?

Re: Very Slow PC with 2x HDD's

Have you tried going into the Bios and where you set it to SATA, try setting it to SATA + PATA to see if it helps. You didn't say what board you have, but in my Asus P5DGC it has this option and might help, you can always go back and set it back to SATA only. Also, I had this exact problem when I installed more then 1 SATA drive on that same board I mentioned before and a Bios Flash completely cleared it up.

Howdy Clinton and Welcome to TSF,

Also what rating is your power supply? If it only does this when your second hard drive is put in may be over exerting it.

Power supply is a Atrix 650T which is 600watt

Motherboard is a Asus PSP800

Can't find where it wants me to change those above options in setup.

Re: Very Slow PC with 2x HDD's

It's under IDE Configuration on the main page. Onboard IDE Operate mode. Under Enhanced Mode Support On. It is right there. It should be set to SATA, but you also have the option to set to SATA + Pata. I set mine to this but it made no difference, but the Bios Update did.

What Bios revision are you running?

Patrick

Re: Very Slow PC with 2x HDD's

in the device manager go into properties for the drive and tick the box
enable dma when available
go deeper into the properties box and check what it is running as
dma or pio

There is no option in device manage that lets you select that :(

Re: Very Slow PC with 2x HDD's

Under IDE ATA/Atapi Controllers. Open that and then go to the IDE Channel your hard drive is on and you will find it.

Re: Very Slow PC with 2x HDD's

They're all set to use dma when available.

If it helps...

It is first noticeably slow when it has finished checking the S.M.A.R.T on the bios.

No idea whatsoever what version of bios I'm running. Which is the easyest way to find out?
