External Hard Drive not Recognized
Hi
First post on a new problem. I am running a brand new computer XP pro with a 320Gig HD and Intel dual core processor. I used to have an aging 40Gig computer that gave up the ghost two weeks. Attached to the old computer was an external hard drive a Maxtor 80gig model 3100. It worked fine and still will work perfectly well on my wife's laptop. However on mine I am getting a code 10 error-yellow exclamation mark on the usb port. I tried it on all five of the ports with the same result. I know from the beginning research I have done so far that it has happened to others as well but there seems to be no definitive answer that I can find for resolving this problem. Any ideas? Thanks |

Re: External Hard Drive not Recognized
Hello and welcome to TSF,
From memory A code 10 in the device manager is driver related, so the only thing i can think of is to right click and select properties and choose update driver

Re: External Hard Drive not Recognized
Thanks for that
The problem is that the drive didn't come with drivers and so it won't update. The fact that it works on another machine suggests a conflict on mine but I can't think what it could be. I read somewhere it could be an IRQ problem but I really have no idea if that is plausible. Again thanks |

Re: External Hard Drive not Recognized
Do you have sp2 installed on the computer where the external usb drive doesn't work ? (Start => run => winver to learn about your windows version)
