New ATA 150 vs SATA 3.0 install on old MB
I have a Socket 754 Gigabyte GA-K8VNXP mother board which has ATA150 SATA connections. My 80gb hard drive is almost full and I want to get a bigger one... However, new SATA 3.0Gb hard drives are cheaper per Gb than SATA 150s. Will as 3.0 HD work connected to the SATA150 slot on the MB?

Yes they are backward compatible, some drives western digital for one needs to have a jumper set on the back of the drive to make it 1.5. This jumper does not come with the drive so make sure you have a spare one laying around

Re: New ATA 150 vs SATA 3.0 install on old MB
On the WD drives the sata speed jumper is not labled for some reason at least on my 80 gigs but the jumper should be on pins 5&6 witch are the two pins located next to the power plug.
Note; I have seen some motherboards were this jumper is not needed Good luck! |
