hard drive and RPM

i have a Compaq Presario Desktop PC and i want to put a new hard drive in but i dont know which one to buy.

the one i hav now is a ATA drive ...if i buy a SATA drive will it connect?...what is the difference ...if not then does the RPM matter...or does it hav to be a certain speed based on the computer?

Idea

Your motherboard MUST support the features of what drive you choose, thats what sets the limits of what you can use, if you don't know what your board is get and run everest in my sig to see then report back and we can tell you more.

no; your computer does not support sata natively. but if you desire to try a sata drive you could buy a Sata PCI slot controller card which will give you sata controller capabilities. A high quality sata controller card as made by Promise will cost about $35.00 to $40.00 and will be a bootable version.

There are other cheaper solutions, but I am not an advocate of such.

RPM is basically spindle speed and speed of the HDD. Higher, faster, better performance, noisier, warmer.
