Post HDD Temperature

Hi there

I have two HDD, one ST340810A [40GB, Primary Master] and the second one is ST380011A [Primary Slave, 80GB]. Recently I installed Hard Drive Inspector Pro and I find out that the temperatures are reported to be high to the warning level. As present the Temp are being reported as 49 C and 51 C. I also find that after an operation of about 1hr the temp rises to greater than 60 C for both the HDD.

I am using ATHLON XP 1800+ with 640MB DDR RAM. The machine is Compaq Pressario 3353AP and the second HDD I installed few months back.

Are these temp within safe level? If not how can I ensure that that temps remain within safe level?

Thank you.

Yes, they're too high. You should be getting about 30C, no more than 40C.

Open the case and make sure the fans are spinning and there's a clear airflow path between the front and back case fans. Are the 2 drives installed one on top of the other with no room between them? How many case fans are there and how are they positioned?

Did you check your system's power requirements before fitting the new drive? What make/model is the PSU, and what does it say on the label for +3.3V, +5V and +12V?

Download SensorsView and post back with the temperatures and PSU voltages, both at startup and after the temperatures start getting high (or 2 screenshots if that's easier).

You might want to considder one of those 5.25" drive bay fans, and install one right above the hard disk. Or get a 3.5" drive bay fan if you have 3.5" external drive bays above your hard disk.

I don't know that program, but if it shows system temperatures and PSU voltages, then it will be fine.

A HOT hard drive can also be a sign that it may be on the verge of failing.... but I agree with the above post, seperate the two drives and see if one runs hotter than the other....

Take a look at one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811999152
You can mount it below your hard drive right above an intake fan at the front.

Thank you everyone

I have cleaned my Heat Sink and installed a chassis fan and it seems that temp have gone down a bit. I shall look for the other devices that you have suggested and I shall install that one which suits my pocket and fits inside too!

Thank you again.

basically; every location that your case has for a case fan, should be occupied by such!

case fans are cheap, what they cool is NOT
