Assigning drive letter to stubbern volume.

The highlighted volume is the one I am trying to assign a drive letter to.
Right clicking it and attempting to 'change driver letter and paths' doesn't work because it is disabled('greyed out').

There is data on the disk that is trying to be recovered, so formatting/repartitioning is out of the question.

Hi!
I assume you have your OS on disk 1. Is disk 1 first in BIOS boot order?

Disk 1 has my OS on it, and is connected via SATA.

Disk 0 is the one i just hooked up and am trying to get data off of, and is connected with a IDE cable.

I'll restart now and check my bios to see which one is first.

Same Problem

I have the same problem. I built a new system with a SATA HDD and wanted to slave my old IDE drive into it to transfer data. I couldn't get a drive letter, so I bought an external case and connected it that way. Still no drive letter. Drive letter cannot be re-assigned for the same reason. I believe this is b/c the IDE HDD is my old MBR disk. Is there anyway I can get rid of that while still keeping my data?

In BIOS the SATA drive must be set before the IDE HDD in the boot order.

Hi,

What brand name is this drive and how do you have it hooked up. Like, what are the jumpers set as and what position do you have it hooked up with the ribbon cable?

Note: Longboard, please start a thread on your own instead of asking about a different situation in this thread that may be slightly different. That way you can get separate help. It is just too hard to deal with two different circumstances at the same time in one thread.
