Confused 'Operating system not found'

Hi folks... another problem from me... i started repairing my old computer... it started up fine (with no o/s however), i put my windows xp pro sp1 disk in (the one that came with it i mite add)... i did the first half of the 'install' - i.e. the formaing and copying of files... then i restart the computer and tell it to boot from the hard drive, however it comes up with 'operating system not found'. i have done this with 2 hard drives, both trying to install windows xp onto them 2 times (wiping current partition each time)... any help as to why the computer doesnt reconise it would be appriciated...
cheerz

My System

Is the HDD an IDE drive or SATA? One is wide 40 pin connection, the other is a slim cable ...

check the jumpers
master goes on the end of the cable
slave goes to the middle plug
