Thanks, The service tag illustration at Dell looks like it's something marked by a UPC code on the case. I have new headache today: disk won't be recognized after running yesterday and cd not recognized either. Do you know anything about the IBM Deskstar that comes with these things? I'm not using that one because I can't figure out all the jumper crap listed on the drive. I had to move cd _off_ of the secondary channel, then use a standard cable to use slave and master channels on primary to get any action out of this box. The deskstar that came with the used computer was wiped from some office setup. I'm about ready to throw in the towel on it. But then I make a little progress and keep going. |

a added note that just may help also !?!?
whenever i replaced a cd,my machine had trouble recognizing the new replacement. the fix was to,remove the old cd=> go through the bios setup, and full system start-up,then shut down windows,un-plug the power supply, attach the newer cd=>plug in power supply, turn machine on,=>run bios setup again. for some strange reason this has worked for me 99% of the time.On other machines i could just replace the cd run bios setup and all would workjust fine, rather than remove cd,run bios, add new cd,run bios setup again. ps.---replace you bios battery, and reapply thermal heat sink compound |

Well, one thing at a time. I took a new tack on this job today (I also thought of putting a Linux on the box but got a bad burn from the download.) The new tack was to install Windows 2000 pro. It is apparently installed correctly (I'm using it now myself on my desktop machines) and it found the 3com NIC onboard the motherboard by itself. Trying to find that stuff from Dell for old Win98 was driving me up the wall. It was like going down the rabbit hole with one error leading to another. This machine is for a user who knows nothing and just wants to run email and the net down in the basement once in a while. But she needs it for our organizational work. So something of a fresh start today. I may have learned something about Stop errors in Win2k as well. I also found an old extra long IDE cable which may allow me to stuff everything back in the case the way it's supposed to be. But for the moment, I am going to put on Firefox. Then give the service code at Dell and see if that will find the audio and video drivers needed which Device Manager in Win2k tells me are still not working. While I'm doing the Firefox can you give a step by step for what to do at Dell? |

greetings
Greetings from the Dell GX150.
I got it connected to my router and switch using Windows 2000. Next step is to go to Dell Support. I don't know if I'll have a lot of problems with this. I'm going to power down and copy off the service tag from the screen at setup like the guy said. |

Well, I managed to get to the Dell site, opened the Intel integrated graphics driver download. Got that. Then it said install now. It didn't install, it _downloaded_ another setup program. This setup program is on the desktop not in the Dell folder. The setup program cannot find what it is supposed to install. I tried moving the setup file but it still hasn't found anything. Who has done this operation before on here? NGO? :-) I'm getting closer but it's procedures like this that make me crabby. One download per driver without all this screwing around should be enough. After video, there is still audio left to do, plus some unknown PCI device unspecified by Device Manager in Win2k. |

Grat to see that you are making real progress at last.
Go to your device manager (not sure with win2000) and right click on your display adapter and choose update driver and then point it to the drivers you have downloaded

all of the downloads are self extracting.when you do download,
save them all to a folder like (C:dell\drivers) so you know where to find them.click on each one and follow the instructions that pop up in each new window. navigate to the file where they extracted to, and click on the setup file.BE SURE THAT YOU READ THE .txt files ( readme.txt ) etc. if i recall ?!?!,win2000 has some extra instructions to follow. don't give up---you are almost there! not only will you have a nicely working computer, you will have a good idea of what the sevice tech at the local computer shop goes throuh almost every day !!!! |

Here's the problem: I have downloaded things in the normal manner and a group of folders including one called graphics and such got extracted there. A screen opens and says this and that and below is the 'install now' button. So far it all makes sense. But the 'install now' button doesn't install anything. A downloader screen opens to go get a setup program which lands on the desktop (where all my downloads go.) Running this setup program from the desktop produces an error which states that setup cannot find the language to run correctly. This whole sequence of steps is either incorrect or if it is correct, it is hooey. Setup has to go somewhere else but I don't know where. It likely wants to open a dialog that asks you to select your language like 'english' to continue. I moved 'setup' to the folder where I figured it should go with the graphics one and the rest of the initial unzipped package from Dell. But the same error persisits. I'll go copy it out (was hoping to avoid it.) And yes, some people like those in the business have more patience than I do. I found my way through the hardware problem of getting a none working machine going (with my own parts) but this software thing should be a lot easier... like going through an upgrade at Microsfot where one your hardware is known you select what you need from a menu and it auto installs. Meanwhile I'm out here with my thumb up my.... never mind. :-) |

The fine print
A couple of new things.
I reran the driver installer and the screen tells me this driver is for Windows ME and 98, 95 etc but does not list Windows 2000 Pro. Well, my lack of attention I suppose but out of 115 files that unpack, something should be in there for Win2k. I then registered at Dell tech forum and posted a question there. The traffic looks low there so I have no idea of when I response will come through. |

Thanks for staying with this. I did get a response from Dell today: That response sent me here: http://support.dell.com/support/down...os=WNT5&osl=EN But I couldn't get the download to start up. Let me know your progress. |

news of the day
I got the download to run from the specified link for Windows 2000 for the
graphics driver of the GX150. FYI as there's a difference in the amount of downloaded files: Win 98 ME etc goes 115. For Win 2000 the file count in 108. Same screen pops up that says language support not available. But I took the next step and actually went back into > Settings > Display > Settings (tab in Display Monitor) and tried the color range and adjustment index. Color range remains at 16 colors. But display index pointer can be adjusted now to 800x600! What a relief. That is enough for most text applications. I do not know what the color range of the onboard Intel 81x graphics VGA is. You can't watch the news on this thing but you can read websites and mail without too much difficulty. With all the fiddling around, the case doesn't want to both snap shut and runt he hard drive, so I have it canted up like the hood of a car. That's a small price to pay for the alterations of cables, connections and hard drive replacement. If asked why the case won't close, I'll tell the owner "this computer wants to be free." ;-) Please continue with any findings you get for the GX150. A question I have on the resolution would be: Is there a way to run the drivers wizard for new hardware which can find a 256 color resolution on the GX150? |

first thing
did you download ALL the files from dell??? did you get the AC'97 audio to work properly??? second thing download a program called aida32 a link is somewhere here at the forum.it will tell you everything about your computer.(free and really good) third thing go to display properties window=>settings tab left click on advanced =>then adapter=>list all modes see what it says there???? also, left click on properties=>left click on driver=>left click on update drive =>follow on though with the driver up date make sure you point the wizard to the folder where you un-packed the video driver file from dell at.the rest is done automaticall by windows do the same with all the downloads from dell(through the device manager) you cant really screw it up too much(that's what the cancel button on the lower right is for) !!! if you do manage to do just that, you can scream, pull some of your hair out,run around your house 2 or 3 times, and do something disgusting to the neighbors garbage can!!!!!! (dont do it to you own) what your video will end up as depends alot on what your moniter can handel always keep in mind that the downloads can be bad(corrupt) just go through it again until you find something that does work (((after you read all of this and decide you are a real glutton for punishment ?!?!?! let me know, and i'll keep posting ))) the reason for this => got old 110 fired up,installed an old 6gig hard drive, installed an old 2x cd reader that had only the analog sound cable, hooked up my spakers, found my win 2000 cd,loaded her up,found my dell downloads i had saved to cd,-----did this, that, and the other, STILL NO DAM AC'97 AUDIO THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU, GOT DONE TO ME i started recalling the really hard time i had, countless downloads that didn"t work, lots of time on the net, nothing that really worked,--bla,bla,etc. but i also remembered that i got her to work perfectly without having the original dell setup cd.(could't find one for $1mil (now probably $20 mil) some down loads are not up-grades they are down-grades!! while i'm doing all this i decided to check out the newest firfox,down-loading,and doing dell&intel yep seems ok,decided to download a free firewall, to see how that checked out. walked away, started on old 110 again, came back ten minutes later, about 12 pop-up windows telling me about all the spyware, virus and bad stuff that they just down loaded on my computer!!!!! hjt just sits there after the scan window comes-up, looks at me kinda stupid and don't do nothing!!!!! ie is only half there,(kind of par for the course), firefox is somewhere over the rainbow!!!! my new project FRESH INSTALL XP i forgot that i had turned off my antvirus and firewall while i was messing around with ie&firefox ---old people do stupid things sometimes---and i just added one more to my list.!?!?!? any waaaay ,she's up and running,100%,purrrrring like a little kitten. Now it's your turn! please keep in mind that this is just a hobby for me,i'm not a professional!! |

I'm not going to quote all of the above.
I was doing another project today and the Dell is sitting ready to be picked up. I am not a professional either and it became dreary finding things that didn't work. The screen resolution is still 16 colors. Can you go through that simply and I may give it another try. I have a cd made with the zip file on it but what I'd need for any discovery process is to find c:/dell drivers/whatevs which rarely works for me at all. Plus my net was off all day today and just back on now. :-/ |

My service tag is on the back of the machine and also displays on the BIOS screen. AIDA32 is not familiar from any of these discussions so is it on the computer or at support.dell? Right now the machine is waiting to be picked up. At the time of pickup I was going to go through with the user how to plug things in and such. |
