computer trouble

Hi all, First time posting so be gentle :)

My problem is: A few days ago, my laptop completly froze whilst i was using it, the only way i could get it to respond was by hitting the power button to make it reset, upon reseting the laptop tries to load for about 5 seconds, and then i get a message "Disk can not be read, press any key to restart" and it does this everytime i try to load up the laptop.
Does anyone know what could be the problem, I dont wana take it down the repair shop and pay £50 for the guy to tell my its beyond repairn or something

any advise would be great

Thanks

Paul.

My System

It sounds as if your hard drive might be failing.
Can you achieve safe mode? Last known good config?
You had better back up your data if the unit lights up again.
