disk dissapeared from system
hello,
pls, can anyone give an advice? I'm running win98 with a small (2GB) disk with a sys and most of progs on it. About a year ago I bought additional 40GB IBM HDD, mostly as a "storage place" but as well with some progs on it. I had a probs to install it, because my MB didn't support large HDDs. I had to flash BIOS, download Disk Manager 2000 utility and then install it without problems. Few months ago when I did a back up of older CDs (CD ageing - data killing :( ), it showed approx 15GB free space yet and dissapeared from system. That time I had to format HDD to get it back. Then it worked normally till now. Again I wanted to back up my CDs so I copied them into HDD. When I had about 9GB free space yet, I got "cannot read file..." message from win. I clicked OK button and then disk dissapeared from win. After restarting (several times) it wasn't there too. Every start it's found by BIOS, then when running Disk Manager2000 it's found as well but as "New disk found connected, do you want to install it?". If BIOS founds it correctly, DM2000 as well, why win98 cannot find it too? I forget easily about that old copies (anyway it's mostly only a HDD backups from the past on them etc), but I had also quite important work files and the most important my newborn baby pics on it, which I didn't burned to CD yet. Is there any chance to get those (I expect your advice will be "hdd lost") data back somehow? Why this problem occured, if there were still at least 5-15GB free space(is it a HDD problem or any win98 error)? Is there any way how to aviod it in the future? much appreciate any help!! peter |
