Be prepared with the big freeze operation. Have your 2nd HD all set-up, configured, and the space "cleared-out" before you start so you are not wasting time while your bad HD is thawing.
Work in priorites; Get the most important data off first. Take large chunks rather than single files. It may be this HD's final dying gasp, so make sure it's a good one. Oh, don't move the files; copy them. That way you are not wasting the bad drives finite time in doing delete operations. |

Ok got it out the freezer and connected it. For the first few minutes it keep doing a long warming upwhir, then disconnecting-reconnecting (because the windows sounds were playing). Now its back to the "click-click-click-click" every 3/4 seconds

What they are asking you to do is remove the hard drive from the external casing and place in inside of the computer. This may give you a better chance at file recovery. Some of the dos based recovery tools may or may not detect the USB drive... but having it a slave would give you your best chances. Try these sites for how to:
http://tech.yahoo.com/gd/adding-a-se...o-your-pc/2988 http://www.basichardware.com/HowTo_I...ard_Drive.html Make sure that when you open the external housing up that you take a look at what brand the drive is, this will help you select the correct diagnostic tools. |

Ummm ..... Dude, if it's going to die, what difference does it make if you take it apart? Or "butcher it" as you so eloquently put it. You will either have to get a new drive to put into that case or go get an entirely new external drive anyway. So, if you replace the drive, you will have to open it anyway. If you don't open it, you probably won't get the data off it before it dies completely. And every time you power it up increases the chances it will be its last.

i think i may have forgot to mention that when the drive is connected, windows UI freezes and doesnt respond for some time. you can still carry on doing stuff in open programs but nothing else. It also does the same on the windows in starting up screen.
Is it really a good idea to still install it internally where this will always happen? And also if its installed internally it will always be booting and die quicker (if its not moved on already) |

Well, you may be getting these particular issues because it is connected by USB and it's going bad. There is no guarantee it will cause the same issue connecting it internally. Also, it does seem to be the best chance to get your data off the drive. You aren't going to want to put it in the computer and continuously boot it up. If you try it and it doesn't work and you get some error messages, write them down, shut down, disconnect it, reboot, and post what you have so someone can try to help further.

well after much effort i've got it out the case, bodged an internal installation, got chkdsk to work, and now its running, though incredibly slow.
I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for all the useful advice you've given me. |

Nah, the warranty expired a good while ago (i think the drive was approaching three years old).
It's still alive, and i've got most of the stuff of it. I have 15GB left, which is mainly music which wouldnt be a major loss. That said it looks happy to continue at it's slow pace for the forseeable future, so i should get the lot. Thanks again for all the help |
