Hi,
I am having a problem with my hard drive (I think). Whenever I go to install a program, it takes forever. I'm trying to install Macromedia Dreamweaver 8, but it is taking a very long time. To see if it was my computer or the program, I downloaded a Virtual DJ Trial (just to install, 18mb), and it says it will take 22 minutes to finish, with simple txt's and dll's taking about 5-10 seconds. However, when copying and pasting files within windows explorer, it works fine, maybe a little slower than usual, but not drastic. I have no system restore points, HijackThis came up clean, and BitDefender and Norton scans show no viruses. Also, I took out most of the processes running in the task manager. Does anyone know the problem? Thanks! Specs: Dell Dimension 8400 Maxtor 6L160MO 1 gig ram ATI Radeon x800 |

Welcome to TSF:
Please list what upgrades have been performed on your system since it was manufactured from Dell. The reason for this question being the Power supply unit supplied with manufacturered PC's if usually just about adaquate for the original spec for about 2 years. If you have upgraded video cards especially or more ram and more hard drives etc then you may have a hard drive which is under powered by the PSU. A second thought being: download and run Memory Test (memtest86) free in my links below @ signature / diagnostics Also you could download and run the Maxtor hard drive diagnostic utility to check the mechanical health of your drive >>>> run the extended test! let memtest run for atleast two hours three is better post back with your results and information

check your drive transfer modes-device manager>expand ide controllers>rite click on primary and secondary ide channels>properties>advanced settings tab-transfer mode should be dma if available-current transfer mode should be any of the ultra dma modes (2-5) not PIO mode
