It has to do with you not having SP1 or 2,

you are going to find it very hard to get support with non genuine copy of XP, I would contact microsoft and you can purchase a genuine key to make your pirate copy legit, alternatively you can get yourself a OEM copy of XP far cheaper and do a repair install of xp on your machine.
It is a policy of this forum not to support piracy in any form so that is the best advice I can offer.

I agree with Blackduck all the way, go to Ebay and get yourself a legit copy of Win XP home they are dirt cheap compared to the previous months, with the near release of windows Vista.
a computer that cant get windows updates is DOOMED http://cgi.ebay.com/Microsoft-Window...QQcmdZViewItem

the problem you are having is not a conflict between the hard drive and the bios revision you have. after all; doesnt your bios report the correct maker, model & size ??????
you situtation is the OS was installed with a Native XP disk (non-service pack) normally you could slipstream sp-2 onto your disk but you cant do any of that with a pirate copy. its time for a legit version of the OS then you will be fine; guaranteed
