External Hard Drive..

I have a seagate external hard drive which i have lost the power cord for....since these are so difficult to find... i figured that i could attempt at removing the case, and inserting the drive into my computer. Does this seem like a sound idea? or should is it too risky, considering the possiblity at frying the piece of metal I can't do anything with, anyway.

its not hard but dont break aynthing. make sure u take it apart carefully and dont drop it or statically charge it.

if its a 2.5 inch drive u need to get a harddrive cage to mount it in the bay and also an adapter. if its a regular one just take it out put it in hook it up to the molex and the ide cable and ur good togo

It is not Ultra SCSI. It is regular IDE PATA. If you don't care about warranty you should be able to take it apart with some pations.

Seagate is one of the most dificult drive to take a part with. We thought about tampeting with security as well as external drive reability.

When plastic case is taken apart (which fairly difficult without braking it). You will see 4 - 5 Star Secure Tamper Proof Torx screws. Without proper instrument it is very hard to remove them. After thouse screws are out. It has ruber vibration dumpering rings. They hold very tight to plastic casing. And it take quite a bit of force to seprate metal fins from plastic casing. After That is done. You will need to unscrew metal shield off and separate USB/Firewire board from the drive.
