Smart status fail
Can someone help with this? Sometimes my computer won't even boot. It goes into a blue screen and wants to test allocation, free space and things. I let it do that and it takes hours! When finished, it boots okay for a couple of day's, then does it again.
Test Option: QUICK TEST Model Number: WDC WD1600JB-00EVA0 Serial Number: WD-WCAEK1279910 Firmware Number: 510.R551 Drive Type: IDE Capacity: 160.04 GB SMART Status: FAIL Test Result: FAIL Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 1 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 65 (Error Log Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 1! Test Time: 19:46:57, October 11, 2006

A SMART error is an indicator that your hard drive is failing, as you can tell by the attribute values above. Your data should be backed up as soon as possible and your hard drive replaced. Keep in mind that your test program is getting the values from the hard drive itself - the hard drive electronics are recording how many times it has a problem with itself and reports it through SMART.

That was fast!
You guy's are quick to replly! wow! One other question. Can I still use the drive for storage? It is only 2 years old and 160gig. Or is it complete, throw away garbage? I do have another smaller (40gig) drive I can use. Thank you so much for all the info!

Whenever a drive reports SMART errors it is considered unreliable and could die completely at any time. You might be able to use it for a few more weeks, but you would be risking your data.

If the Drive is only two years old, and depending on the circumstances of how you purchased it, you might still be able to get a warranty replacement on it.
You would need to contact either the place of purchase or Western Digital™ direct though.
