Need info please :(

Ok Hi everyone..it's my 1st time here....
My pc crashed last week, the blue screen and everything. It happened once before and a friend of a friend fixed it for me without losing any of my data. I asked him to do the same this time, and he took the pc to his work place and tried to fix it, it turned out the harddrive i guess was really damaged and he couldnt save my data, but he said he fixed it to work properly. I'm getting my pc back today, but now i am totally freaking out because it crossed my mind that he could have maybe accessed my files, the important ones were hidden but not in any special place. He said he fixed it to work alright, but he didnt say weather he replaced my harddrive with a new one or just cleaned my damaged one. If he replaced it with a new one, I'll ask for the old damaged one back, so that i can destroy it, all of my files on it, even if they aren't accessible anymore. I'm just wondering how can i know that it is my harddrive he'll give back, the one i had, and how can i know if he by any chance was able to access my files and copy any of them? I dont know him personally so i cant say what he would or wouldnt do, but i'm really worried :( Help me please if you know a way i could know my data isn't exposed.

Hi, welcome to TSF

There's no way of knowing if he accessed or copied your files, but you'll need to ask him if he replaced the drive with a new one.

I think if he was going to fit a new drive, he'd charge you for it. He's unlikely to give you one for free.

Hmm thank you...yeah i was just hoping.. even though i thought there's no way to know...and since the guy was a friend of our friend, and our friend asked him to fix it as a favor, he i guess replaced it with a new one, because he works with pc's in general and he has extra parts of pc's like that... so i'm gonna go tell him to bring the old drive with him too hopefully he will bring it back to me...in any case thank you, and this is a big lesson for me..and for anybody else who comes across this in time

Send a message via MSN to linderman
recently opened documents folder may show whats seen accessed if he didnt clear it ???? I doubt it

if he had to replace the drive; chances are he couldnt access the data either

Hmm i doubt that there is anything on my pc at all now, since he wasn't able to save my data, I'm guessing that if he really did replace the old damaged one, that he couldn't have accessed the data anyways...I don't know, all of these "what if's" I can just hope and pray that I'm overreacting about this...that it's not what I think could have been....

p.s. linderman do you mind if i ask where you're writing from? i'm just wondering really..and thanks by the way for the reply

if the old drive still spins on/ stick it in a plastic bag and in the freezer over nite then you might could jumper it as slave and retrieve the data.

Heh thanks, yeah it'd be really nice to get the data back, but i'm more worried about it being exposed in anyway to anybody you know....but thanks i might just try that when he hopefully gives my old drive back to me..
