Very slow booting
Hi,
I am using a Dell Inspiron 1100. It is taking about 10 minutes to boot to a point where I can check my email. This problem has worsened since I installed Norton Antivirus 2006. Any suggestions? |

Hi, welcome to TSF
Does Windows run ok after it has finally booted? How much RAM and free disk space do you have? Do you have any other antivirus software running apart from Norton? It could be a problem with too many programs being loaded at startup, or your security software running updates or scans. To see your startup files, go to Start > Run and type msconfig, then click the Startup tab and post back with everything listed under the Startup Item column on the left.

The following can be removed from the msconfig startup list (untick the box next to each entry, click Apply and OK, then reboot):
carpserv .... Enables modem speaker (laptops I think) SynTPlpr .... Additional configurations for laptop touchpads DSentry .... Prevents autorun for CDs. Optional, it's not slowing down boot time. LXSUPMON .... Lexmark printer icon in the system tray. Optional opware32 .... OmniPage program that allows you to scan documents into MS Office. Optional REGSHAVE .... Related to Fuji FinePix digital camera. Optional Gear511 .... Configuration options for Netgear Wireless LAN devices. Optional, but should be left if it's not causing any problems. jusched .... Java autoupdater Not sure about these: IMlauncher .... ?? igfxtray bittorrent .... I'm not sure what the Intel Display Adapter has to do with Bittorrent, so leave that for now. See if there's an option in Bittorrent to disable running at startup. None of these programs should be causing a 10 minute boot time, so you may have other problems. Post back after you've tried removing the above.

another consideration is how long have you been running your current windows installation ????
I personally reformat and reinstall my OS at least once per year windows always degrades in time, broken files, registry clutter, driver fragments etc personally; I would purchase another hard drive and clean install your OS & programs to the new drive and slave your old drive so you can access your existing data ? drives are very cheap nowdays, it doesnt make sense to suffer any perfromance loss when $55.00 to $70.00 can buy you a new big 160 to 250 gig drive
