Want to erase hard drive

I have windows XP and it has some viruses and other items that I just don;t want to bother getting rid of. I want to basically start over with the computer. I have already removed the files that I wanted to keep. Please help.

Isn't there a way when your computer is first turned to hit F3 or something like that to start the process of erasing the hard drive. I have done it before by this method, but it has been years and I don't remember to well.
