Hard drive death ?
I have a 200GB hdd for just over a year now, It's been working fine up until this morning when i went to switch it on and it said 'disk boot failure insert system disk.' Which i done and tried to repair it, but it didnt work, it is a legit copy btw.
I've tried a couple of recovery programs and they havent worked either Offcourse i only want to re-format as a last resort, theres quite a few thing on it that i hadnt backed up, So here's a bit of the puzzle thats confusing me just now..... In disk management i get this piccy ![]() The yellow circle being my Hard drive, Why it's registering as that gawd only knows.... But then if i look into my device manager it shows up as it should ![]() I didnt have it opened for this screen shot, but in the dvd/cd-rom devices it shows three things. my cd player, dvd player, and another dvd player ( the hard drive ) Any ideas out there ? I was hoping if it would show up as a hdd i could recover some stuff off it, Why it's coming up as a dvd player is stumping me !!!! Thanks for any help/advice anyone can give me |

For starters i would recommend popping the case and just double checking that the cables are all secure and seated properly.
Then, i would suggest you run the diagnostic tools that maxtor has provided when you bought the hdd (maxblast i think) to check for any errors. If you lost the CD or the software provided isn't correct, search the support/download section of the manufacturers website. We'll go from there.

I think the diagnostic program is PowerMax, with MaxBlast being the utility program. I think you'll find your hard drive is bad.

Non distructive repair install.
1 - Boot with the Windows XP CD press any to boot XP disk 2 - Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press Enter 3 - You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed. 4 - The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to repair the selected Windows XP installation. To run a Repair Install Press "R" at this time. **Note** if you do not see the option to repair the selected Windows XP installation DO NOT choose the option to continue installing a fresh copy without repairing as that will overwrite your data and cause unrecoverable data loss. 5 - Windows XP will copy the necessary files to your Hard Drive to begin the installation and will then reboot. You will see the message that informs you to "Press any key to boot the CD". Do not press any keys this time just wait a few seconds and the Windows Startup Screen will be displayed. Following this you will be greeted by the Windows XP Setup Screens. 6 - When Setup has completed you should find all of your previously installed apps and settings are intact. |

if your missing drive is attached to this controller
uninstall the controller in the device manager and reboot and see if windows reinstalls it if not run your m/b setup disk
