Ide issues

I recently bought a 40g backup drive for my computer but ran into issues upon install. My system is:

Amd Ahtlon 1700
Msi K7T Turbo 2 mobo
512 pny ram
Raedon 9800 video card
Samsung 10 gig Master drive
Sony Dvd-rom drive
Lite-on cd-rw drive

I booted off my system, put in new hardrive, connected ide cable, then power and rebooted and after ide detection it didnt recognize a hd being there. I powered off, disconnected the drive and upon reboot, it still didnt recognize it being there. I fully took out the ide cable and installed it back in and nothing still. I swapped cables with my cd rom drives and connected the master drive only and it booted fine. I reconnected my cd drives and it didnt recongnize the hd again. Why would all of a sudden my hd fail ide recognition?

did you set the jumper shunts correctly ???? the existing boot drive should be set to "master" at located at the end of the data cable (important step)

the second drive should be set to slave and occupy the middle connector on the IDE data cable

please verify

what is the "other" drive set to ??? I will bet CS=cable select and that doesnt work they either both have to use master & slave or use Cabls select and let their position on the cable determine their role; but these settings can not be mixed
